View Full Version : Hitting wrong Sat...
Hi guys, newbie here with what is probably a typical newbie question. Some idiot hit our dish with a backhoe bucket and knocked it out of alignment. I have the coordinates that are supposed to return my service to normal, but they didn't give me any service. I played with it a little bit and finally got locked back on to 119. I am also receiving from 129 which hasn't been the case before. The problem is that I can't lock onto 110 to get my local channels and the rest of the channels that I am missing. Is there something that I may not be doing right or is there some special trick to it? For the record I'm in North Georgia and the coordinates that I was given were
azimuth-226
elevation-39
skew-125
I have it set at
-between 180-200
-49
-115

If you're using a DISH500, you need to point it about 7-8 degrees east of where it is now. You're pointing at 119 instead of 110.
Did you verify that your mast is plumb?
Sorry, yes I have the 500. Mast is still plumb. Is that why my signal strength is in the high 70s for 119 which is way higher than it has ever been before? I'll go try to move it east, thanks.
I tried moving it and still no 110. When I go to the point dish screen do I only change the sat or do I need to change the transponder # too? I moved the sat to the east slightly and its still just saying locked on 119 when I try to find 110. The signal strength did decrease, but it's still just showing 119? What am I screwing up???

Yes, it could if it were on an empty transponder or one that is spotbeamed and not in your area. Best transponders for 119 and 110 would be 11 or 12.
You need to raise the elevation too.
I changed according to the suggestions but still can't get 110, so it looks like I'll be calling Dish for a service call. Thanks for the help.
If your dish was hit with a backhoe it is possible the dish is warped and needs to be replaced.
Did you move the dish a little bit or 7-8 degrees? Also, as BNUMM suggests, you'll need to dial in the elevation a bit. If you can still see 119W and 129W, you need to move quite a bit more. Once you get the highest possible signal on 119W, go 7-8 degrees east from there. Once you have 110W showing, up the elevation a fraction.
If your dish is damaged but you can get 119W, you should still be able to pick up 110W at some position.

That seems like a very bad starting point. I entered 30360 (Atlanta) into my receiver and for a Dish 500 it shows
Az 228, El 39, Skew 127
If you enter your zip into the receiver and select Dish 500, it may show 125 for the skew, but you shouldn't be TOO far from Atlanta. I hope the 115 is a typo, but if you really have your skew set to 115 instead of 125/127, you'll have trouble getting both 110º and 119º. If you pick Dish 300 instead of 500 in the signal strength / peak angles screen, it would show the Az/El to them individually and you are just aiming for the average of both settings on a 500.
A pointing tool for 30360 shows:
Atlanta, GA 30360
Latitude 33° 56.268'N Longitude 84° 16.296'W
Sat Name Sat Lng Az(t) Az(m) El Skew
-------------------------------------------------------------
EchoStar 8 110.0W 220.8 225.9 41.9 32.8
EchoStar 7 119.0W 231.2 236.2 36.0 40.3
Telstar 7 129.0W 240.6 245.7 28.5 46.3
When you pickup 119 & 129, you are pointing 10º too much toward the west.
The LNB has markings showing which LNB is for 110 and which is 119. When you are getting 119, cover the 119 LNB with aluminum foil and verify the signal goes away. If it doesn't, it will when you cover the 110 LNB with foil, and you would want to move 10º back toward the east and raise the elevation 7º.
You can change to the 110 sat to find out the Az/El but it isn't necessary to change that to try to receive 110. You MUST have a Transponder selected that your receiver gets a signal for on 110 - that's why Transponder 11 was suggested. If you leave it on Tr11 and have a signal on 119 (thru some LNB), just moving the dish will show you when you get a signal for 110 - it will just say "Wrong sat". That isn't a problem though - you need to complete a Switch Check once you do get a signal from both 110 and 119 before changing the selection in the menu can do something.
