View Full Version : Signal Strength...Is This Normal

I have a 301 and Dish Pro 500, on occasion when I check my signal strength I will momentarily get on both 110 and 119 a red bar and wrong sat message which quickly turns green with a signal strength of 115 to 120 on both sats. I don't want to do any dish tweaking because everything is working fine, really need a severe rain storm to block signal, but was curious about what I stated above
Thanks:confused:

Does the same thing on my non-dishpro lnbs and switch, so I'd say that it's normal, and you have excellent SS, so no dish tweaking is really needed for your setup.

I have to agree with Mark - don't touch a thing on your setup.

I have seen something like this before and there could be a problem with the wiring, lnbf, or receiver.

No, this is normal. The signal bar is always red and says wrong sat for a second or two before it locks in on the transponder.

Thanks for the replies, I will leave everything just as it.

You mean everytime you change a transponder? It is normal when you do that.

What is the lowest signal strength number that is acceptable? Some of my 110 transponders are in the mid 80's, while most of them are in the low 100's. Almost all of my 119's are at 120 or "spotbeam". Is it possible to get all of the 110's over 100? Should I leave well enough alone?

That is a good signal strength. You need ~40% to get a signal in but a signal in the 70's and 80's should be what you should get at least as acceptable unless you just cannot pull in a signal due to trees. If you have a clear line of sight you should have over 100% easily.

Is there an online resource that shows the which transponders are active and what strengths we should theoretically get on each?

I ask this because about half of my 119 numbers are "spotbeam" or 125, and about 3 of the 110 are also. The rest of the 110's are mostly below 100 and the rest of the 119's are above. Some of the transponder's don't show anything. I take it those are "dead"?

I am trying to understand the transponder mysteries.

No, the ones that appear dead are Spotbeams and you are not in the area where that spotbeam signal reaches.

Most areas will not get signals on all the Spotbeam Transponders.
