View Full Version : Connecting to the internet
I am trying to connect my HD DVR to the internet. I have a computer near it that is connected by a wireless connection. I have an ethernet connection on the back of the computer. I tried going from that ethernet connection to the connection on the DVR. I tried connecting to the network through the setup menu but no luck. Any suggestions?

Welcome to DBSTalk
You cannot run a ethernet cable from your PC to the HR20.
If you need to go wireless on your HD DVR like it sounds like you do you need to get a wireless adapter with a ethernet connection not USB. The Linksys WGA54G game adapter works great and there are a few others out there that will work.
You need to connect that to the ethernet connection on your PC to set it up to work with your network and then connect it to your HD DVR and run the network setup in the menu.

I've never thought of trying this, and I'm not really doubting you as I kinda doubt it myself, but are you positive this can't be accomplished if you enable "internet connection sharing"?

I guess it is worth a try but I don't think it will work and I also think I have seen a post or two on here about others trying this.

Only tricky part that comes to my mind is he would probably have to set an appropriate Static IP (proper Subnet Mask and same first 3 sets of the IP Address as what the rest of the network uses) for the receiver.

I consider myself to be pretty good with computers but this is not something I am familiar with. Could you give me some guidance as to what I should do?

Laptop PC as wireless network bridge to HR20
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have a laptop running Windows XP or Vista that has wireless connectivity to the internet, there is a simple way to configure it as a wireless bridge as a way to connect your HR20 to the internet.
First run a cable from the laptop ethernet port to the HR20 ethernet port (a crossover cable is NOT required, and may or may not work).
Open the Network Connections window on the laptop (Start->Settings->Network Connections)
In the Network Connections window, highlight both the Local Area Connection icon and the Wireless Network Connection icon, then right click on the highlighted icons and select Bridge Connections.
Now go to the network settings screen on the HR20 and select Restore Defaults and then select Connect Now.
This is how I am connecting my HR20 to the internet until I purchase a dedicated wireless bridge, which will be a lot more cost effective than using a >$1000 laptop as a wireless bridge.

This is how my HR20 is connected (along with my XBOX) to the internet, and it works fine! However, the HR20 would not automatically connect, I had to manually configure the IP address.

Kinda makes sense since there's no dhcp server on the laptop to assign it an address, I guess ... unless you have that service running.
