The modem on my HR20-100 appears to have bit the dust. It keeps the phone off-hook all the time. DirecTV is sending a replacement.
Just curious, I saw a little bit of traffic on this several months ago, but not recently. Has this been much of a problem with these units recently? Would a -700 be more reliable than a -100 for the modem?

The modem could have gotten a spike from the phone line and fryed it. You might get a HR21-700 or a HR20-700 as a replacement unit.

Not a common problem. I've seen very very few posts about modem problems with these DVRs.

I had this problem the other day also. I got my replacement on Thursday and everything works great now. Mine was a HR20-100 too.

Try unplugging the power for 10 full minutes.
Lets the caps drain their electricity and will reset the modem.

Thanks for the advice. I've already been through all the motions with it including letting it sit without power for over 15 minutes. It keeps the phone off-hook even when it's not plugged in to AC power. My HDTivo is plugged into the same outlet and seems to work fine. I'm sure it's just a bad unit.

You sure the phone line isn't plugged into the network jack by accident?
Please double (no, triple) check that.

Yes, I've checked that as well. The phone line hadn't been moved in months before it stopped working correctly.

Last step to debugging, I promise.
Grab a spare phone from somewhere in the house and plug it into that same wire.
If that doesn't cause the same issue, either call directv for replacement or forget about using that jack on the receiver for the rest of it's life.
The last software update included a firmware update for the modem. If the failure was coincident with that maybe you should force the update to happen again?

The OP already has a replacement unit on the way.

Yeah, I wondered about that. However, the modem was messed up two days before the new firmware downloaded. Coincidence only.
Everything about the phone lines is good. There haven't been any surge incidents recently that I know of, and a wired phone works on that outlet as well as all others.
It's just a bad unit.
