View Full Version : New 5LNB
I'm getting HDTV within the next few months. Did a search and saw the great picture of the 2 mounts used (standard and 5LNB dish). My current standard dish is on the side of house and has been mounted for nearly 5 years with no problems. Looking at the difference in the mounting bracket it looks like I should be OK. The DTV installer will have to move the new bracket over to the right to gain the extra room needed. Not a lot of space but i think it will work.
a couple of questions:
1. Will the installer take down the old dish and seal up the holes from the old bracket?
2. How many folks out there have had problems finding room at the current install sight to accomodate the HDTV bracket?
3. Anyone just not able to go with HDTV because of the bracket problem?
FYI...you can see my dish here (daylight only):

1. The installer may take the old dish down but will leave the base more than likely. They don't want to take responsibility for a leaking roof.
Cant' help w/ 2 and 3.
You might want to consider a pole mount. Much easier and stable IMH.
The 5-LNB is much heavier than the dish you have now. Make sure they use the monopole support arms. And depending on what he has available to drill into, he may not put the dish in the exact spot becasue of the weight.
Good Luck.
When I had my dish upgraded (not to a 5 LNB, but to just the standard dish from a very old standard dish) they removed the old dish, sealed the old holes, then mounted the new dish pretty much in the same spot.
This was a roof install though, not on the side of the house.
Just to clarify, my current 3 lnb dish is NOT on the roof. It's actually located near the corner of the roof line. The bracket is drilled through the vinyl covering and into the wood frame. The problem I see is that there's not much room to work with in that area, especially if I need support arms. Not comfortable with a roof mount and a pole mount near the current location may involve my home owners since it would be viewable from the street. If the pole (other than the roof) is my only option, then my back yard (behind fence) is about 15-20 feet away. Longer cable run.
Is it possible to get an installer to come out to go over my options before making a commitment?

Due to the size and weight of the 5 LNB dish, most installers seem to prefer to install on the roof versus the side of the house. But, you might get lucky and find an installer willing to give it a shot. It can be done.

So much of that depends on the structure behind the siding. If he can mount into the framing it certainly can be done. Monopoles for support should be used regardless.

When the installer gets there the two of you should go over all the options and agree before he starts his work..

Thanks
I wonder if DTV will send someone out BEFORE I actually order the upgrade?

No. The installer should do a once/twice around the house, lay it all out, then get it done.
Usually do... But sometimes they just run with whatever they feel like.
