You will need at least two powerline adapters so that you can bridge the distance between devices.

Yes you need two.
It goes like this:router to powerline adapter into wall plug, second powerline adaptor into hrxx and into wall plug. Note neither of the powerline adaptors can be plugged into a surge protector. And they need to be on the same circuit.

Oh and one other thing..the PLAs will come with a disc that will allow you to "encrypt" (if that is the word I am looking for) each PLA incase you are in an apartment complex that shares circuits. You do have to do both of the modules.

The Directv website has been redone a bit and is a bit clearer on the need for two than it was previously (although calling it a "kit" could be misunderstood). Fortunately for anyone who ordered only one, there is no shipping charge and delivery is pretty quick (FedEx 2nd day).
When I ordered mine at the end of December, the ordering system was all messed up and I had to cancel and reorder after a couple of weeks and numerous phone calls. A few weeks ago, three more adapters showed up on my doorstep. When I called to ask about it, they said that although the original order was cancelled (and my CC statement verified that), somehow they got shipped anyway (they didn't know why there were three instead of two). When I asked if they would send a recovery kit to send them back, the CSR talked to a supervisor who said I should just keep them after all the trouble I had.
