Washington – Consumer Electronics Association president Gary Shapiro said Tuesday that people will stay calm and adjust quickly if they fail to prepare for the digital television transition scheduled to occur early next year.
“This is not people losing their homes,” Shapiro told a luncheon audience comprised mostly of communications lawyers. “This is people losing TV services.”

Which in all honesty...
They probably can get restored in about two hours (drive to a store, buy the converter, connect)... once they find out why they can't get TV after the day.

In reality ... it won't be "the day". It will be a period of time leading up to "the day" - especially with stations that will have their digital signal on their analog channel after "the day".
We'll know more on what stations are planning over the next couple of months as they make their required filings with the FCC giving their individual timetables. I doubt if more than 10% of full power stations will be analog on the day before "the day". (With at least 30 day on air notice several times every day before each analog station goes away.)
That will help with the "run on the stores" when a particular channel goes off the air in each market.
