I've been a longtime user of X10 products, so I was curious about the X10 IR10A Icon Remote. I already own several learning or programmable remotes, including a Harmony 676, a Home Theater Master MX-500 and a Sony RM-VL600, but they all miss the mark somewhere. At any rate, I decided to try the IR10A and received it in yesterday's mail. Setting it up using the remote's wizard is a snap. I was able to quickly set up the components in my bedroom: Vizio LCD TV, HD TiVo, Onkyo stereo receiver and Delphi Roady XT XM satellite radio receiver. The only component I wasn't able to set up from the remote's library was my Toshiba HD DVD player. I haven't gotten around to using the IR10A's learning capability to add the player.
So far, the only real disappointment I've found is the lack of allocation of Favorites by component (TV or TiVo). However, you can set up a ton of Favorites lists, and assign each list to a specific component. Also, the individual buttons are not backlit and the text for alternate assignments of buttons is difficult to see. These are all nits, however. In playing with the remote last night and again today, I can safely say it was worth the investment, and in many ways, it beats the Harmony and other high priced remotes. The backlit display is bright and very legible. The ability to assign logos to the Favorites screens is a great feature. The remote is fairly large in size and buttons are big, unlike the Harmony remotes. And the price can't be beat!
