Got an email from buy.com for a Seagate 750 Free Agent Pro external hard drive for $139, 5 year warranty and free shipping. I have one like it and it has been working great. Thought this was a good buy.:D

This is the one with the eSATA port, right? And do you use it with your DVR? Has it been reliable?

This one will only work on HR20. It does not work on HR21 due chipset incompatibilty.

I just bought this same drive at BestBuy this weekend for $179 - and I thought I just got a good deal. Anyhow, I connected it to my HR-20 last night and it seems to be working just fine so far.

Really? First I have heard this. Is there a list of incompatible chipsets/enclosures some where?

Hi I've been lurking here for sometime now and really enjoy this forum. I was wondering Now difficult it is to hook up this Seagate 750 external hard drive to a HR20-100. Is it a plug and play or do I have to take the HR20 apart and make some changes inside? Would it be very difficult to do.
Thanks Franko

I've been getting ready to dive in and get an eSATA myself, so I'd love to know this was well....

Welcome to DBSTalks :welcome_s
very easy to do, just follow these steps.
1) turn off the HR20-100 and unplug it
2) connect the esata cable to the esata slot
3) power on the esata unclosure and allow full power up
4) plug in the HR20 and allow full boot-up
5) perform a menu reset
there is no inside Mod's that needs to be done.

On the HR 20 700, it's pretty much plug and play. I believe you just power down both the dvr, then power up the seagate and connect it to the dvr with the sata cable. Then power up the dvr and it should recognize the seagate as its new hard drive. If I've missed a step, somebody chime in, but I think that's all there is to it.

All you need to do is attach the esata cable after you power down the HR20-100. Plug in the Esata cable and plug the DVR back in. The HR20-100 will format the harddrive for the required format. Just so that you know only the external will be useable. Existing recordings on the internal will remain on the internal and you need to remove the external to view the internal.
You will also have to set up your your series links and to do list with the new drive.

I've been using a FreeAgent Pro 750 with an HR20-100 for 6 months and another FreeAgent Pro 750 with an HR20-700 for 4 months and I have had no problems with either one. :)
