Good morning folks,
I have a buddy that I just turned on to D* after many years with E*. He had no problem with his installation. He's brand spanking new to the HD scene and I beleive he got the HR21 HD DVR. But he claims he can not change channels with the number pad of his remote, he states he can access the channels through the guide only. Any ideas, I have not been ablle to get over his house to see whats up. Thanks for any help.

Just a guess here, but make sure he set up the remote to work with the receiver and not his TV. Thus, when trying to change the channels he's been changing the channel on the TV rather than the receiver.

Tell him to slide the switch at the top of the remote all the way to the right (tv mode) then all the way back over to the left (directv mode).

Yeah... That's probably the simplest solution. Of course, I didn't think of it.

Yep that worked, should of thought of that myself. Must be a little glitch in the setup. Everythings working OK now. He's one satisified New D* customer. Thanks again.
There is a channel lock feature on the remote where the following keys in the tv device will control the sat instead of the tv: CH UP & DOWN, 0-9,and PREV CH. To enable it:
1. tv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 9 7 3
4. press CH UP
to disable it:
1. tv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 9 7 3
4. press CH DOWN

Every once in a while, the switch will get bumped between the Directv and AV1 mode just enough to goof (industry term :D ) it up. It's the main reason I don't like the slide switch.
