Sheldon Chrysler says his finances are in ruins since he became a victim of identity theft and a collection related to a DirecTV account in Detroit landed on his credit report.

Chrysler, who has never lived in Detroit, filed police reports and sent letters to DirecTV and the credit bureau Experian explaining that he was a victim. The 61-year-old Denver resident said his pleas went nowhere and his credit score plummeted.

"No one should have to go through this," Chrysler said. "All I want is my good credit back and my chance to make a good living."

Edit: [Tom Robertson]The article is very interesting, I recommend reading it. Alas, as copyrighted material, we can only quote a small amount here. Please read the rest at the Denver Post link Reggie3 put at the top.

Interesting story .. I'm not sure fraud is exactly the right word as this seems more like a processing error than anything else. Nonetheless, the result is the same and action needs to be taken to correct the situation.

I would venture a guess that we're not hearing all sides of the story here as the article is a little light on the details. Assuming Chrysler reported the potential fraud to DirecTV, it would seem that either they didn't agree with the assertation that it was fraud. Obviously there needs to be some documentation to prove fraud took place, otherwise anyone who wasn't satisfied could claim fraud. And believe me, the stories that people come up with when they don't want to pay a bill can be pretty entertaining. It is interesting that the article lacks the details of who aledgidly ordered the service.

On the other hand, having dealt with the credit bureaus to address errors, the deck is so stacked against you that its virtually impossible to get errors corrected, even if you have the documentation on your side. The creditors who place entries on your report are always assumed to be correct and there is no checking by the bureaus if the entires are valid.
