Anyone else starting to look at the certification upgrade to 2008? Man I hate feeling like I'm back in school cramming for an exam.

At least it looks like you can get MCITP: Server Administrator AND Enterprise Administrator in 6 exams.

My last certification was for Windows 2000.

Around here... with all the "cheat-sheet" books that are out there, to just past the exame.... I have found that listing them on your resume...

Is more of a target.. .then a help.
I know when I interviewed people and saw they where certified on SQL Server... I grilled them even harder, to see if they really knew the system... or if they just passed a test.

I completely agree. It is hardly an indicator for true ability. The problem is when your company relies on your certification to have IT'S certification :P

Earl's right! Certifications have lost their value. There are way too many companies out there who prepare people to take the test... not teah them what they need to know.

I like Earl stopped at Windows 2k for my MCP, MCP+Internet and MCSE.

I agree 100% as well that certifications have lost their value as well. I have performed many interviews over the years and I tell people that no matter what the position that they are interviewing for if they have something listed on their resume that I am knowledgeable on then it is fair game. No kidding each person said ok no problem but couldn't answer some of the most basic questions. It got to the point that I had to stop because we were getting complaints from the placement agencies for grilling their people then of course HR got involved.

It is also true that certain companies have to have their people with the most up to date certifications. Usually they are Microsoft Solution Providers.

When I did admin on Novell Servers they made a big deal about certifications. But I never felt a need since if you don't have experience working with a system, the cert just gets you part of the equation. Experience is priceless.

On the otherhand, without a degree you won't get your foot in the door, unless you are lucky or work very hard towards becoming boarded to be an engineer. Before I earned my degree, I was ignored for engineering jobs. Once I finished, I was sought after and had a choice of work. Even though my degree had nothing to do specifically with my work.
