As of the beginning of February, I had DirecTV installed for the first time. I just recently this past week purchased a plasma TV and was thinking about upgrading to HD. I've read many posts and it sounds like it depends on the CSR you talk to and the deal you end up getting. However, I could not find anything on anyone upgrading this early into their contract (1 month). I called DTV to inquire about an upgrade, but was told it would cost me $199 for the HD DVR. Is it worth making multiple calls until I can find a CSR to give me a deal? Or is it wasting both DTV and my own time to even try? If so, is there any special scenarios I can give them to help get a better deal? If only I would have had a plasma when I signed with them. :p

You're a very new subscriber, so I think you'll have a very hard time getting a much better deal than the "standard deal". But if you're willing to install the HD DVR yourself, you can save a bit of money by getting one at Costco.

If I were to purchase one separatly, is the satelite swap install still remain free? Also, when I go to the costco site to try to find the HR21 receiver, it just brings me to a directv ad every time. Is the deal your talking about in-store only? Thanks!

You could call multiple times to whine about wanting a cheap or free HD-DVR like some people do. They probably end of with a refurb.

I'd just go out and buy a NEW one at a local store.

If I went out and purchased one thru, say costco, would DirecTV still come out and do the dish swap for free?

I don't know for sure.

I'd think if you called and told them you got a DIRECTV HD DVR from a local store and you want to upgrade to HD and pay them more money per month for the HD programming they'd come out and install a new dish for free.

I'm thinking you may be better off with D* doing the work if they give you a deal for HDDVR and free sat dish upgrade install for $199. Both at once would mean by the end of the day, you're in HD land rather than getting a Hr21 now and wait for D* to come to swap dishes.

Being in some early as a new sub, this may be your best option.

I'm still thinking the OP would be better off getting his own DVR from a local store to be sure he gets a new one and not a refurbished one.

I'm not sure what's the difference if he gets a DVR, calls DIRECTV, waits for new dish install day(1 week or 2 weeks) or calls DIRECTV and waits(1 week or 2 weeks) for dish and DVR install day. He'd still be in HD land within 1 to 2 weeks either way.

Very true. The way it sounds, D* likes to hand out a lot of refurbished units?
