Any suggestions on getting the best deal on the HD DVRs?

All you can do is call DirecTV and ask. Every deal is based on your history with DirecTV.
You can also call back 50 times or whatever it takes to cry and whine a lot until you get what you consider to be your perfect deal like some people here so proudly post about. That's not worth the time and effort in my opinion.
I called last night and was told they can NOT:nono2: discount the HD-DVR. They will give me a free install on the HD dish (next Saturday), but dug their heels in each time I asked for a discount on the DVR. So,....I'm off to Costco and pay $169 for one.
Install report next week.
BTW.....thanks for all the good tips and experience with CSR's and installers. I was able to ask all the right questions. Now if I can just get the installer to remove the old dish, we'll be good to go!

This can be very risky. DirecTV will likely flag the account, making it harder to get any goodies/upgrades in the future.

I did not ask for anything when I got my two HD-DVRs. one reason was I got a deal from a dealer directly for about $150 per HD-DVR (not much of a discount) and I used movers connection to get all 3 of my DVR run for two lines. I know everybody wants something for free but I believe in Directv service and throughly enjoy it. It has been worth every penny to me.

Yesterday I got a call from D* asking if I was getting all of their newest channels and offering a free upgrade install including equipment ! I said " Where were you 3 months ago?" A few hours later, I got another call with the same offer. I have been with D* for several years. Anybody else get this call?

I received that call numerous times, and I have had the HR20 since it came out in Aug/Sept 2006. They must not have a cross reference type of system.

Here's the deal I got Sunday when I finally decided to take the plunge:
Keep my HD Tivo
Trade my SD Tivo for a new HD-DVR
Buy a second HD-DVR for $199
$120 in credit over 12 months
3 months of HD Extra free
Free 5-LNB system
Free install
I was pretty happy with that deal and it seemed reasonable. The CSR in retention did a great job of addressing my concerns. Here's hoping the install goes as well as the phone call

I called today to upgrade a HD receiver to a HD DVR. Since I just paid $99 for the HD receiver 4 months ago, I asked if I could get a $99 credit towards a HD DVR. The rep put me on hold for couple of minutes then came back with an offer of $10 off my sportspack for 6 months. Not a bad offer. My HD DVR will be here in a cuple of days!

and that will also earn you a frequent caller tag, and if you mention disconnecting to get the deal, it will earn you a goodbye, your account is cancelled.

I thought regular were $49? Could be and probably am wrong though :p
I paid $299 for the HR20 at circuitcity, bought the 5 LNB dish for $85 or so.
I installed it all myself and it was worth every penny.
