Principled Technologies was hired by Microsoft to do some real world testing of Windows XP, Vista and Vista SP1.
Microsoft did hire this company, so I dont expect any highly critical results here, but the reports make some interesting points.

Seeing that it looks like they pitted all three versions as 32-bit (x86), I wonder how the x64 version of Vista compares in "real world" tests like these.
Interesting results by the way. I can attest to a point as Vista SP1 (x64) for me does run better than XP Professional does on my other partition. It wasn't true when Vista first launched, but between the many patches and now the Service Pack, I have little to no use for XP anymore.
My install of XP has gotten much slower over the last year, even with regular cleanups. It was the third time I had to re-install XP from scratch due to serious performance issues. I haven't had to do any of that maintenance to Vista at all and it still starts pretty much just as quickly as the day I installed it.
Don't get me wrong, I do love XP and was very happy with it when I was running it primarily. I'm just happy now to be running an OS that seems to be more stable and after a year of use, I still have yet to see a BSOD in Vista. I couldn't say the same for XP.
Maybe after this I should just buy a Mac? :D
