My friend just bought this computer
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8649368&type=product&id=1195599475576
I am going to get it all set up for him.
my problem is i can't tell if the second video out which I am going to hook up to the tv will carry audio.
The port looks like a standard DVI port but the ATI website talks about HDMI audio for the Radeon 2400xt.
Is there a hdmi port somewhere on the machine? Does this DVI port (which i don't believe normally has audio) have something in it that will carry audio (the other of the cable will be HDMI).
Does anyone know?

I'd rather use HDMI audio than run RCA cables from the sound card...

TIA,

John

DVI does not carry audio, you would have to run seperate audio cables.

The page you were looking at on ATI's website was a general page that covers the entire 2400 series video cards. It is not card specific.

The ATI Radeon HD 2400XT does not have a HDMI out, the ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro does.

John: DVI doesn't carry audio. Unless you have digital outputs on the computer, you are stuck with the RCA outputs.

Ok. don't understand this but...
We all know that DVI doesn't carry Audio.. HDMI was created to do this.

However, I just finished this weekend the install of that Gateway PC. I ran a DVI to HDMI cable from the second video port on the ATI 2400 to the Samsung Plasma.

It carried a video signal.. AND an audio signal!!!
SOMETHING ATI has done send audio out the DVI port and as long as you have a HDMI connector on the other end..

So much for standards eh??

Interesting .. My Daughters' new laptop actually has an HDMI port (and VGA) on it instead of a DVI .. Then you could convert to DVI as need which would stay within cable specs .. hmmm.

The ATI Radeon HD 2400XT does not have a HDMI out, the ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro does.As far as I can tell from their website, all of the HD2400 series does HDMI/has audio out. The 2400 Pro is the lower end card.

Apparently the connector provided with the cards is special. Something like this: http://www.directron.com/hdmipowercolor.html

This special DVI connector passes video AND audio.

I'd love to know how, since I don't see any free pins in this picture :)

Wierd thing... I didn't use any special connector...
I just bought a 40 foot DVI to HDMI cable from monoprice....

Now that I know this card does this tho... I think I might buy one for myself for a pc I'm gonna convert to a Media Center!
