Hello all. I'm sure this has been discussed before but i'd like to ask anyways.

When can we expect all HD content to be moved away from the mpeg 2 system? I currently have the HR10-250 and wanted to know when the streams are set to change entirely to mpeg 4.

Thanks for looking

:)

The current thinking has this transition happening within the next 12 months. There has been no hard date publicly offered by DIRECTV.

You should familiarize yourself with the HR2x landscape as that's where you'll be living if you continue with DIRECTV.

There hasn't been a firm date set yet. But, the Network DNS Feeds are moving from the mpeg-2 feeds in the 80's to mpeg-4 feeds with channel numbers equal to the SD counterparts starting at 380.

But the mpeg-2 HD content won't stay around forever. My guess is through the end of the year, if that long.

I would expect before the end of this year.

Depends on how many HD customers still have just MPEG2 equipment. I bet it's still quite a bit and I'd be shocked if everyone got upgraded and all the remaining MPEG2 HD moved to MPEG4 by end of 2008.

Approx 500,000 as of last conference call.

All extended sports packages, are MPEG-4 now.
LA-DNS moves in 4 weeks to MPEG-4.

Then NY-DNS will be next on deck.

They are going to start pushing the issue, more aggressively during 2008.

Or to phrase it another way:

If you hold out for a little while longer, you'll get a great deal. But not too long, because then they probably think you're too picky and won't care about you anymore :P

So get an idea in your mind of what you think a "fair" deal is, and jump on it as soon as they offer it to you :)
