Pardon my ignorance, how do I tell if my PC has USB 2.0 or earlier version?
It is about 1.5 year old H.P. running Windows ME.
Thanks:D

Almost assumed that it is v1.1 As most vendors like HP didn't come out with v2.0 USB on their machines till around a year ago. If the system was a State of the Art system then it may have 2.0, if it was a more budget system then probably not 2.0
But you can goto their web site and look at the documentation they may have online and it will probably list the components.
Take a look at the USB ports; if you see a plus sign (+) next to the USB logo, those ports support the USB 2.0 standard.

Not always, On my machines, there is definately two machine that cam with USB2.0 and two did not. I don't have the Plus on any machines (But those are the front of case ports, so that is custom to the vendor case, Dell). Can't move them to see the USBs on back of machine.
But looking at the hardware list of of the machine that did not come with 2.0 but I added a 2.0 PCI card to, the added card says "
USB Controller NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller (B1)
with or without the 2.0 card it also had these
USB Controller Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442
USB Controller Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444
USB Root Hub
...
While my USB 1.1 only machine says
USB Controller Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442
USB Controller Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444
USB Root Hub
...

When I looked at the HW settings for 2 machines that came with the 2.0, it had listed below. So the USB Enhanced seems to coencide, and of course the USB 2.0 Root is also a dead give away. I don't have that USB 2.0 root on the machine I added the 2.0 PCI card to so that may imply motherboard support???
But I guess if your machine came with 2.0 ports it would say USB 2.0 Root Hub.

Oh, in case it makes any difference (probably not) the machines I sampled were running Win2K or XP.
