View Full Version : New trick I learned for skip

In the past with the HR10 and HR20 before skip, I would always be scanning the ff for my show and then hit play. With skip you have to watch a second of the ad to know if you have gone to far. Last night watching my Sarah Conner recording I learned a new trick using 'their' little annoying logo at the bottom. It is only there on the show, not the commercials. So now I just focus on the logo and jump forward and back using it without having to listen to 1 sec of commercial.
Stupid, I know. But it made me really happy to use that thing against them. Maybe if they find out they will remove them.

That's a good idea, thanks!

I've used both the logo and pillar bars many times myself. :)

The biggest problem I have is that I always skip to the right place only to find that when the HR20 starts playing it's really one skip farther ahead than I thought it was .. Invariably I have to rapid fire the replay to get it to the start .. I had the same problem with the TiVo, though but 8-secs vs. 6-secs per click made a big difference.

Have you noticed any issues with hitting backskip to fast? I found that if I 30-sec skip 15-25 sec into a show, and immediately start hitting backskip rapidly to get back to the start, it takes 5-10 presses. If I wait for each backskip to act, it only takes around 2-3.
It seems like backskip doesn't know what timestamp its acting on until it starts to play again.

I use the same technique..works great (most of the time). Some channels either put the logo during a commercial that advertises a show coming up or the logo will show up like 30 seconds into the program.

For me, 6 clicks with 30 second SLIP on seems to work for almost all commercial breaks.

Yea, I am just now finding that with UHD programs.

Some of the roll-your-own DVRs use that trick (among others) to detect commercials and automagically skip them for you. Myth is a particular example I can think of immediately.
Other methods used include detecting black frames, differences in audio level and/or eq, frequency of 'scene changes' (a bunch of 30-second 'scenes' indicates a commercial block), and other image processing detection (saturation, color balance, etc).
These methods used in combination are quite effective at detecting commercials from program material. Of course, these don't really apply to the wet-ware-based detection devices (eyeballs and brain). Just food for thought. :p

Many years ago, I had a VCR that had a commercial skip function (RCA, IIRC). After recording the broadcast, it would automatically rewind the tape and electronically “watch” the show to mark the commercials. After that, you could watch the recording and it would automatically FF through the commercials. It was very accurate and this was something like 10 years ago, so this technology can’t be too difficult. Of course I would not expect to see it on a content-provider’s DVR simply because the content owners would likely balk at that. I believe we are damned lucky to have gotten 30SKIP (and I am very thankful for that!).

I would say that I am seeing the same behavior, yes.

I have that issue, too. Thanks for putting into understandable words.
