View Full Version : Quick question for 501ers about new Search features

Hello all. I was curious what other 501 owners though about the following.

On 167, and the new Search features are nice. One item I would change though is the default/selected option for Searching, title only or title and body of show description.

Right now, it defaults to search both the title and the body of the show description. I've almost never needed to search in the show description area. I'm always interested in titles, and wished that was the default, as searching through titles only is much faster.

Is this everybody else's opinion too, or do most of you prefer the default to search both the title and description area?

Just curious what you all think.

Interesting question. The ability to restrict a search to titles was introduced in P168.

Perhaps it should depend on how the search was entered. When you press Search, the text box auto fills with the title of the currently viewed live or PVR program, highlighted PVR list entry, Browse banner, or highlighted EPG selection. If you keep the auto entry, it should be presumed you want to find other showings of this program and the default should be Titles Only.

If you Clear the auto-filled text to manually enter a different query that presumption is harder to make. You might be following the work of an actor, performances by a favorite singer, or a topic of interest. For those you would need to check All Event Info.

All but a few of my own searches are for titles.

I'm guessing that most people search titles first (or mostly).

What would be nice is a default setting option somewhere in the "System Setup" menus.

Baring that, I'd like to see Dish switch the default to 'Titles Only' option.

Finally, yeah I'm on 168 (actually 169 now), not 167, when I wrote my original post. In the immortal words of Homer Simpson, "Doh!" :)

Titles only should be the default -- its so much faster and is probably correct if you believe in the 80/20 rule.

I'll agree with the titles only as default for the search. It really speeds up your searches and if it was the default it would be even faster to search for something.

There is a bug in this selection: If you select "Search Titles", then go into History and select a previous search, it defaults back to "all ". Was this an oversight on Dish's part? I vote for "Title" to be the default.

I'll add my vote for "Search Titles" to be the default. Bet somebody at Dish decided to leave it the way the older software worked for backwards compatibility.

I have been wondering if the "Themes" doesn't use the same internal search routine -- and maybe the default has something to do with the possibility that the search and the themes (search) are using some common functions and/or defaults behind the scenes. I guess the true test will be to see if they change the default -- becuase that shouldn't be hard, unless there are other reasons to be defaulting the way it is.

What I do, is if I select an entry from the History list and want "Title", I start the search, immediately cancel it, select Title then proceed with the search.

I think once an item from History has been selected for "Title" it will stay that way on subsequent History searches.

And when will Dish change Search & Themes for just Subbed shows? This is extremely annoying when searching for Movies, since it reaches the 500 maximum in less than a day.

Why don't you do this instead. When the search window first comes up, select the "Titles Only" option THEN go into the History screen and select something to search? For me, when I do this, it searches the history item in titles only.
