Ok, I’m sorry for this redundant question, but I just don’t understand the CID problem with the HR21-700.

I’ve done a search and can’t find what I want about it. Over the past two months, I’ve replaced two of my R15’s with two HR21’s. Pryor to this, the CID (even CIDCW) worked fine on the two R15’s, but can’t get it to work on the HR21’s.

Also, I’ve had an HR20-700 for two years, and have never had a problem with CID on it.

What is it I have to do to get it to work on my HR21’s, or is it just a software problem? I thought I’ve seen elsewhere that others do have the feature on their HR21’s.

Thanks for your help and patience in this situation, because I know it seems like I'm :beatdeadhorse: .

Is "CID" = Caller ID? If so, the big thing with the HR21 seems to be grounding. There are some good threads on this, but I hesitate to link in case I'm mis-interpreting your acronym. :(

Again, thanks that's a great link and I'll investigate my grounds tomorrow.

BUT, why would there be a problem with grounding when as i said, my HR20 and previously owned R15's all worked fine with Caller ID?

That I cannot say, my friend. I have no technical knowledge but I do read the boards and know how to search and that's about the end of my strengths! My only guess is that the HR21 has different circuitry that appears to be more sensitive than the other products you listed....

I have had a similar, yet different problem. I have reported it but apparently no one has any ideas.
My CID will notify me that a call is coming in. However that I need to call my phone service to subscribe. I have CID. Like you, mine worked fine on both of my R-15's. One a 500 and one a 300. The 300 is still in operation. Now here is the odd part: My wife works from home every other day. So she has her office calls forwarded to the house. And guess what! CID works perfectly!

Well, I went out this morning and checked my grounds, and sure enough, the ground wire from the Dish was broken, so I reconnected it.

Checked the other grounds from the switch and they were connected. Went back in and called from my cell, and still no CID.

I beginning to think, despite what everyone is saying there's just an inherant

Mine works fine. Have you checked the phone cord and the jack? Were the other DVR's connected to the same jack? Does the phone line test pass?

Yea, all the tests pass, including the phone test. Thanks.

Caller ID & Messages
This feature lets you receive important messages from DIRECTV about your service. Also, if you have Caller ID service, you can view phone calls you’ve received or turn call notification on or off*. PressMENU to display the Menu, select Calls & Msgs, then select Edit Settings. Select either Caller ID orMessages from the left menu, as desired.
Caller ID
The Call Log tab displays up to 25 recent incoming calls*. Highlight and select a name to delete that listing from your log.
The Notification tab lets you turn the notification feature on or off. When the Notification option is on, you’ll see a notice on your TV screen whenever a call comes in.

Have you tried turning the notifications off and see if it works? I don't know what the default setting is and I'm not sure if mine is off or on because I'm not at home. Have you done a menu reset?

Yes, I have reset caller id, I have reset the receiver, I have unplugged and repluged the receiver, I have desconnected the phone line and reconnected it (and yes, I know the defference between an RJ11 and RJ45 jack). Not a lot more I can think of.

As I said, I can't for the life of me figure out why the HR21 won't work when all others do or did. (including eight years ago when I had a Dish DVR where the switch and dish were not even grounded, but then, that's not really releavent)

Thanks.

I was just trying to throw out suggestions. At this point it would seem that your HR21 is defective or something is corrupting the caller id info. The caller id info is passed between the first and second ring of the incoming call. It could be that the HR21 can't decode the info, is more sensitive to noise on the line, signal levels etc.

do the calls show up on the screen at all (without the ID) or anything at all in the call log or is it as if you've never received a call?

I hooked mine up last week and all just *worked* without a hitch. So I would lean towards defective as well.

This won't help but I find it interesting my R15-100 wouldn't work at all and I had it for 6 months. Upgraded to HR21-700 and worked like a charm out of the box. Exact opposite of you. I'm not sure what that tells us other than it may be a crap shoot if CID works on these receivers...

FWIW, prior to this last software upgrade, CID had worked flawlessly on my HR20-700, each and every time. Now it works intermittently (at best). I can't really figure out the pattern for why it works sometimes and not others; it appears to be unaffected by resets; it works basically not-at-all now when watching a recorded show and some of the time when watching live TV. The kicker is that it *is* getting the calls because when you go back and look at the log, the calls are all there, it's just that the "notification" part is completely hit or miss now.

I think something's just messed up with the software and we'll have to wait for them to fix it in the next go-round.

Please don't get me wrong, I DO appreciate any suggestions.

And as a further note, I have looked at the log and there hasn't been anything in the log either (other than the one time when I orignially had CID show up)

And hopefully, the last poster is right and it's just a software problem, but since some get there notification, I have my doubts.

Same problem with my HR20-700.

I had the same problem when I first got my 21. CID on the R15 worked every time. It didn't work on the R21. I checked all my grounds and they looked OK. Turned out that my DSL filter was backwards. Not sure why that didn't cause an issue on the R15 or the old RCA that was there before the R15. However, as soon as I reversed the DSL filter, everything started working and has worked for the past 3 months.

CID works on my HR20 but not my new HR21 and I was wondering why also.

I have an HR21-700 and the caller id will work for a while, then just stop. After a red button reset, it works again.
