Ok, upgraded the HR10-250 to the HR21 today.

The remote, I cannot get to program what I think the way it should be. UGH!!

AV Setup:
=======
Denon 3805 Receiver
Pioneer Elite Pro 620HD
HR21 Receiver

Trying to get the volume to work in all modes.

All audio feeds into the Denon Receiver. I can program AV1 to power on/off the Denon receiver, but CANNOT get the volume or mute buttons to work.

Using code 30160, I can power off the Denon, it then says to report Step 2, enter 993, then select. The volume/mute should work in all modes.

This does not work. I cannot get it programmed.

The TV is a monitor only, ALL AUDIO comes from the Denon receiver.

Any ideas?

Know how you feel. My remote went hay wire yesterday and still can't get it to work properly. Even called DTV and no luck. I have a Vizio tv and I used every code there is, at lease I think I did. I tried every code in list when code 9911 was entered on remote and no luck.:(

I had the same problem, but I found that I had to program the TV in the remote first. Then the receiver.
993 did not work at controlling the volume for the receiver until there was a TV programmed in the remote first.

You need to press vol down and select to get volume in all modes. see instruction on remote set-up

did get the volume to finally go and function.

However, need to switch to AV1 to push up/down the volume everytime.

What a pain in the butt. I miss my Tivo remote already. :(

No you don't. There's a code you can enter while in AV1 (or whichever device you want to
control the volume) mode which will cause the remote to use that device for volume
control in all device modes (slider positions). Go to the DirecTV site and locate the remote
control manual for information on how to do it.

I had to pass that chore on to my wife. She got it to control the Audio receiver but it took awhile. I did not have the patience.

I just did this yesterday.. with a Yamaha A/V receiver. I don't know about the other post referencing that you have to have a TV programmed first. I already did so can't confirm or deny that part. Anyway, assuming you want the volume toggle switch to control your receiver volume on all AV slider settings, all you have to do is this:

First, follow the on-screen instructions for programming an AV device (either AV1 or AV2) using the best code for your receiver. Even if you have already programmed that particular device for that AV slider setting, you have to do this again. Then, BEFORE YOU LEAVE REMOTE SETUP for that AV device, hit 993 (it will blink twice), then hit select (it will blink twice again). This is what the on-screen instructions tell you to do but it's easy to overlook that detail.

If you only want the volume on the receiver to work when the slider switch is on that AV setting, there is a different key sequence (it might be the 993-volume down-select sequence mentioned by another poster).

Good luck!

I can promise you, I tried for long time to get the remote to operate the volume on my AV Receiver. I did it so many times I had all the codes memorized. 993 never did anything.
Every time you pressed volume it would constantly say "this function is not programmed" Even on AV1 that the receiver was programmed to, the volume would not work, yet it controlled every other function of the receiver.
That got me thinking... The default volume control 993 is supposed to take over is a TV, but I don't have it programmed. So I programmed in my TV, reprogrammed my receiver and Volume control on the AV receiver worked the first try.

I actually had no intention of programming a TV , because I was only going to use the remote temporary until I got the DVR programmed into my Harmony, But I was determined to get the Volume to work my receiver until then.
Once I got a TV programmed in , the volume for the receiver programmed in just fine.
