It's that time again .. The American Idol Top-12. I'm actually pretty happy with the choice this year. I would have only made one change (if I could, of course).
David Archuleta
Jason Castro
David Cook
Kristy Lee Cook
Chikezie
David Hernandez
Michael Johns
Ramiele Malubay
Syesha Mercado
Amanda Overmyer
Carly Smithson
Brooke White
There is an interesting article (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/11/arts/television/11idol.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=american+idol&st=nyt&oref=slogin) in the New York Times today if you are interested .. a rehash in some respects, but a good read nonetheless.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and give my final 4 prediction ..
Brooke White
Carly Smithson
David Archuleta
David Cook
As for who I think will go home tonight (not hearing any songs yet of course) .. Michael Johns. If he doesn't bring it this week he'll be in real jeopardy. However, as we saw with Bohemian Rhapsody .. he's got it in him and he may very well kick it up a notch tonight. I hope so because I've been disappointed so far in his performances.

David Archuleta,Michael Johns,Carly Smithson,Syesha Mercado here is my top 4
Pre show predictions...... Chikezie better kick it up a notch. He doesn't have the following he needs.
My final four are the exact same as Doug.... top 2 being Brooke and Archuleta Hopefully Archuleta didn't peak too soon. He dropped from 60% to 40% last week in the TVGuide poll. Though that's still an incredible number.
http://www.tvguide.com/PhotoGallery/American_Idol_Power_Rankings:_The_Top_12__1125/1.aspx
Does it have to be 2 guys and 2 girls? If not, I'll go with Archuleta, Cook, Hernandez (!) and Syesha.
I also think Chikezie and Kristy better sing for their lives tonite, though I'm afraid we've already seen their best efforts. /steve

No, the final four will be the theoretical top-4 regardless of gender.

David Cook - Eleanor Rigby .... best performance by anybody this whole season IMHO...
Kristy Lee Cook - she sure is hot but that song was terrible...
David Archuleta - Oops...
everybody else was pretty forgettable tonight...

David Cook and Carly were phenominal. Brooke's version of Let It Be was excellent and moving. Amanda was great as well. Never heard the song before, or at least recognized it. But thought it was good. Chekezie was great too.
I think Dave H and Kristy are the bottom two with Dave getting the boot tomorrow.
David A. did the worst thing by forgetting words TWICE!!! But that is forgivable given his talent.
Overall, the best round of AI that I have ever heard. A very entertaining episode.

Well my top 4 of the night
David Cook
Michael Johns
Brooke
Carly
Amanda I just see as a one pony show.. Same thing ever week...
David A.. Sorry.. after seeing the 4 above who I would most likely buy an album of I don't see him as album potential. Yes it was cut on the smaller stage but the big stage swallowed him up.
Bottom 2.
David H.
Kristy
Both were just really bad
Ramiele and Syesha are moving into the forgettable realm though I did like Ramieles voice.. She sang it real well just did not add anything extra.
As for WOW performances.. None tonight in my book some some really good ones...

Chekezie was the shocker tonight - wow what an improvement!
I enjoyed Chikezie and Amanda (I like blues singers, so probably in a minority on her), especially because they were both probably in the bottom 3-4 going into the night. I also enjoyed Carly and Michael Johns. Syesha, one of my faves, was just so-so, IMO.
I thought Cook and Brooke were good too, but both laid it on a little thick, IMO. Cook with the rock idol mannerisms and Brooke with the tears. Also no one commented that Brooke forgot the words for a second, probably because she just plowed on without changing her expression, like Archuleta.
I was disappointed with Archuleta, Hernandez and Ramiele. I expected better from all 3, especially Archuleta. It's looking like he may not yet be mature enough to deal with this kind of pressure, but I could be wrong.
Guess we're saying good-bye to Kristy. What was she thinking with that?

The radio station I listened to this morning played clips from all of the performances and it was really interesting to hear them through the radio rather than on television with the visual. You know... how you would actually hear these folks if they put out a record.
It re-enforced my belief that Amanda has no vocal range at all and that David Cook, whether you like him or not, has a “radio-friendly” voice.
Chikezie was awesome!
I get why the judges like Carly (or as Simon might say, "what's the name of the Irish girl?") but I really felt like she was shouting the song.
Kristy Lee (one of my sentimental favorites) and David Hernandez were awful. One of them is sure to go home tonight.
My top four from last night:
David Cook
Brooke White
Chikezie (although I don’t think he’ll make it to the final four)
Michael Johns (again, don’t believe he’ll go the distance)

I still can't figure out why David Hernandez is still in the running. To me, he's boring and doesn't perform with any sincerity. I guess it doesn't matter anyway because in the end it will come down to the best, and he's not it. My prediction is Archuleta will take it this year.

Archuletta, if it's based on last nights performance, is going home. He was horrible. worst performance of the night.
Carly still blows the doors off the place. I think she's going to be in the top 3 for sure. And, Michael Johns was good as well. Not his best performance, but it seems so honest, he's hard not to like.
Doug Brott
03-12-08, 09:53 AM
Does anyone else think Michael Johns looks kinda like Tom Brady? MJ's song from last night was sung very well which will keep him in, but it was a bit boring.
Amanda? Can't stand ya!
That said, I enjoyed Cook, Castro, and Brooke...

Folks that get the nod from me this week (now that I've heard them ;) ):
Chikezie
Brooke
David C
Jason
Michael
Chikezie, rocked, rocked, rocked and was to me the best performance
Amanda gets some props, too as this was THE first performance in which I can say I enjoyed it. That's exactly one more than I thought would ever happen.
Clear bottom 3 ..
Kristi Lee
David H
Syesha
Syesha will be going home, IMHO
Oh, and Carly .. perfectly sung, but as Simon would say "I didn't get it." Certainly a lot of folks did so no question she stays but, well, I just didn't get it.

I watch AI strictly for the cute girls. Since 4 of my 5 favorites got sent home already, and the last one (Syesha) is pretty lame, my interest level will drop precipitously as soon as she's sent packing. Having said that, Chikeezie definitely had the best performance of the night. But no matter who wins, I wouldn't even bother bit torrenting the winners CD when it comes out.

I voted for Carly, but I meant to vote for Brooke. My wife and I have liked her from day one, but I still have problems remembering their names. I had a hard time with the songs last night because I am not a Beatles fan and had not heard of most of those songs. However, when Brooke sang Let It Be at the piano, I got goosebumps. A very moving performance.
I had a massive headache last night, so I was half listening... not really watching :P
I think my top for the night was Chikezie. I really like it. Also in my favorites, Brooke, Castro and Cook. Bottom would probably be Hernandez, Kristi Lee (WAY overboard on the country vibe :P moderation much?), Syesha, and Ramielle. Archuleta better watch himself. If he can't work through the nerves, he'll fall quickly. Who's left..... Carly was pretty decent, Johns was decent (though he kinda annoys me a bit for some reason), and Amanda was decent.
Overall a pretty good night. Definitely some standouts and some let downs.

Amanda I really didn't care for last night.
Kristi Lee was awful, awful, awful. That wasn't country, it was hillbilly. WAY, WAY over the top awful. By far the worst of the night, I thought. She should be shown the door this evening.
Brooke & Castro were just alright for me. Nothing stands out to me as being particularly bad about either of them, they just didn't do it for me.
Chikezie and David Cook were both really good.
Syesha.... bleh.
David Hernandez... the guy can sing but last night was baaaaad.
Ramielle.... yawn.
And, dear David Archuletta. I love the kid, and I actually enjoyed his song last night (the parts where he remembered the words). But forgetting the words is like the cardinal sin. Especially when you stop and get that "Oh Crap" look on your face.
I think he'll be saved this week by the fact that Kristi Lee completely and utterly murdered that song!
I got us to thinking though... has anyone who forgot the words after getting into the final 12 ever stayed? I can't recall one. It may have happened and I just don't remember, but try as we may, none of us at my house could come up with one who forgot the words like Archuletta and lived to sing again.
Archuleta won't stay because Kristi Lee was bad, he will stay because he has a MASSIVE following. It takes more than one week to wreck that. I mean... the guy had 60% of the vote on TVGuide's vote. That is insane.

No doubt .. Archuleta has enough votes to make it to the end .. the question is whether or not other singers' votes head to David or toward someone else .. and whether or not David starts to grow.
I do think he now needs to pick it up, though. The other singers have caught up .. even Chikezie. Performance and showmanship are going to start to become important .. Look at David Cook who has pulled out all of the stops in that category.

Guess I am must be one of the few that are not a David A. Fan. I do think he has a good voice, but I definitely would not think he has enough votes to make it to the end at this point and if it continues not owning the stage or not raising his game his popularity should go down. But then again.. This is idol and the person with the most talent usually does not win.
What I think last night showed.. Was though he has a high likable factor, in terms of talent I think there are others that bring much more to table and they include Michael, Carly, Brooke, and David Cook.
Personally I would like to see Michael and Carly in the finals but there still is a lot of Idol left and I can see anyone of 4 or 5 people making it to the end depending on how much they grow from week to week.

Not only get new votes, but keep the ones he has. If he chokes like last night, they will start to fall away.
FWIW - DialIdol still has Archuleta as the top dog from last night. He's the only one that looks virtually safe. Syesha is at the bottom, but everyone is close down there.... Hernandez and Ramielle are in Syesha's margin of error
Not only get new votes, but keep the ones he has. If he chokes like last night, they will start to fall away.I think Archuleta's problem may be that with "Imagine", he had his Kat McPhee "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" moment way too early in the competition. For the past two weeks, I've been expecting something comparable, and he hasn't delivered.
It's a shame he's so young and not familiar with the Beatles, because he could have picked so many other songs more suited to his vocal style that would have given him a similar opportunity to impress, IMO. Lookng over a list of songs, he could have chosen "And I Love Her", "Because", "Blackbird", "Fool on a Hill", "Here, There and Everywhere", "Hey Jude", "If I Fell In Love", "Lucy in the Sky", "Michelle", "PS I Love You", "She Loves You", "Something", "This Boy", "With A Little Help From My Friends" or "Yesterday".
I think he might have hit any one of those out of the park, instead of trying to outdo a Stevie Wonder interpretation of a Beatle's classic. Just my .02. /steve

Ramiele has been disappointing so far. She has the voice, but acts like she is afraid to use it. If and when she does, she can go far

True that. Archuleta lost some points for me since he didn't like the Beatles. (not that it matters since I don't vote) Beatles are the all time greatest IMO :) "Blackbird" is one of my favorite songs. It would've been interesting to see him try that one.
I also found it interesting that everyone talked about "Yesterday", but no one had the stones to go for it.

"Blackbird" and "Yesterday" would have been great choices. If you're familiar with it, "This Boy" would have been an interesting choice for him as well, since it's a very melodic song about a young boy that really could be him. /steve
That boy took my love away
Oh, he'll regret it some day
But this boy wants you back again
That boy isn't good for you
Though he may want you too
This boy wants you back again
Oh, and this boy would be happy
Just to love you, but oh, my, oh
That boy won't be happy
till he's seen you cry
This boy wouldn't mind the pain
Would always feel the same
If this boy gets you back again
This boy, this boy...

I thought the same thing when he said he didn't like the Beatles. Or, "that older music". I guess I'm out of touch, but I was stunned that a seventeen year old could have so little knowledge of the Beatles... I'm only 31, so I missed the height of Beatlemania, and I'm not the biggest Beatle fan in the world, but I know the impact they had on the music scene at their height, and I could sing along with many of thier songs - most of the songs last night, in fact...
The other thing that I found odd about the fact that he didn't know the Beatles is that e wants to be a musician - to make a career out of this, and he hasn't familiarized himself with them. Even though he doesn't like the "older style" music.... They did some really creative, innovative things at the height of their popularity, and anyone looking to have a career in this business would be well served to know the Beatles.
I can't believe that no one has ever told him that if he wants to be great he should learn from the greats... and the Beatles are definately among the greats.
I am 31 as well.... so I was born 7 years after the last Beatles album was released, and I have every Beatles track they recorded on my mp3 player. You can listen from 63-70 and see how they shaped modern music. You can't find many musicians who won't admit that the Beatles had the biggest impact on music of the 20th century... whether they are a Beatles fan or not.

Anyone else find it odd that Archuleta "didn't like the Beatles" or know much about their music but his best performance of the year was "Imagine"?
McPhee was very good tonight. She puts some of the current finalists to shame ...
What a joke that they're taking phone calls in the results show. Lame. They need to lose it.
Oh ...and what about Hernandez? He's confident, I'll give you that, but I think it's misplaced.
Hmm. My local Fox station reported tonight that Sony and another publisher is committed to write songs for David Hernandez and for David Achulletta, win or lose. I can understand Achuletta, but not Hernandez.
Fox is also reporting that someone is trying to sell nude photos of Amanda Overmeyer to a web site - I missed the name. Good to see that Idol is equal opportunity in terms of its contestants with a stripper past ...

And the Beatles admitted that they were being pushed into new territory by none other than Brian Wilson. And, of course Wilson became paranoid of the Beatles' talents. Ah, competition, even in music it creates a better product. Imagine if Wilson could have gotten together with Lennon and McCartney to write a few songs. :) I think that if they could have stayed straight they could have made some even more interesting music. I heard a Wilson interview a little while back where he was asked if he would change anything. His response was that he would not do drugs. Of course, in his case that's a pretty obvious statement.

Amanda Overmyer was a stripper? Didn't know that. I thought she sang lights out last night. Simon complained that he couldn't understand all the words. Who cares?! The spirit was there and smokin' hot.
Kat McPhee was beautiful to see in HD... and to hear. I would outbid Client #9 to spend a couple of hours with her.
Carly also brought it Tuesday night. Great personality too.
I make generous use of my DVR when watching (replying) The Idol shows. There is so much BLOAT in them now. More than ever. I only really want to hear the singing. The judges' comments are so predictable it's painful to watch. Also predictable who is going home.
I liked Michael John's understated performance.
David Cook does has talent too but please David have someone wash, cut, and comb your hair!
Brooke White is a sweety but also a little bland compared to the others.
David A. has a lot of talent. Paula wants to hang him from her rear view mirror. I suppose he is adorable. Good singer too. The Clay Aiken groupies will be all over him and take him to the final 3.
just a few random thoughts on the last two shows. :)
Amanda Overmyer was a stripper? Didn't know that. I thought she sang lights out last night.Well, she apparently took her clothes off to let someone take pictures of her, so, yes, she's a stripper. Maybe not for money, like Hernandez, but .. :)

I guess I am in the minority regarding Brooke. I do think she is good but she is a one trick pony.
I can understand the contestants getting confused about what the judges ask of them, for example, they told David to stop signing the "sad" slow songs yet Brooke continues too and she is "brilliant".
Sometimes they take it too far, I don't think Kristi was terrible but the arrangement was awful. She sounded good but the music was just too "Hee Haw" for my liking.
I liked Michael Johns, Amanda, Jason, David C.
I did not like Chikeze at all. While watching it I thought it was ok then I was in a different room and it was playing and without seeing him I thought he sounded bad. As did Syesha.
I was not upset with David H going home but he had grown on me the past 2 weeks. I was not a fan of him prior to that and the night before. Kristi is pretty but I find her boring as well. Honestly if I didn't read Brooke's name from previous posters I could not tell you her name. I can't tell if her sincerity is an act or not. Kind of like Doolittle from last season.
I find it odd that they say "here is the 3rd worst,2nd worst and the worst performer, lets hear them sing one more time"..what? I don't want to hear them sing ever again. I did not like the question time either.
I find it odd that they say "here is the 3rd worst,2nd worst and the worst performer, lets hear them sing one more time"..what? I don't want to hear them sing ever again.Ya. Thank goodness we were watching it recorded, so I didn't have to hear Kristy's "hee-haw" performance again!
That's the catch-22. They want to give the exiting performers one last shot at being seen by a nat'l audience, but it's always with the performance that got them voted off, and often sung while they are "choked-up" and not in the best performance frame of mind!
If I were producing the show, I'd simply replay the exiting performer's best single past song performance this season, instead of what they do now.

I agree the show is a bit bloated with filler. I mean I can watch the 2 hr show in about 1 hr 20 including listening to the judges. I'm glad its down to 2 days a week, so I can now watch Survivor on a 15 min delay and still be caught up when the show really ends.

I think I was a little mean to David Cook in my earlier post. I said someone should wash, cut, and comb his hair. The wash part was out of line. Just 'cuz he has a style I don't care for doesn't mean that he doesn't shower. There, apology given (like it matters...). He is talented. Most of the finalists are. omo, though I still have to scroll up during a post to remember most of the names. I'm glad David Hernandez is gone. Something about him making googly eyes with the camera at every opportunity bugged the stuffin' out of me. Yuck!
A few other afterthoughts...
David Archuleta forgetting the words was pretty bad but he will not be penalized, rightly or wrongly, for it. Too many fans. What I like about his singing (though not heard Tuesday night like this) is how he sings the length of the musical line without breaking up that continuity with all those inserted riffs and runs that are so in fashion.
I neglected to mention Chikezie too in my other post. I did like his Tues. night performance. His voice is as easy on the ears as his sweaters are hard on the eyes :) Definitely his best performance yet, imo.
