View Full Version : Does it take you longer to get signal strengths for 99s and 103s?

My HR20-100 takes a loooong time to get the individual transponder signal strengths for satellites 99s and 103s. Each TP takes about 30 seconds. In comparison, I can get the entire 101 satellite (32 TP) in about the same time it takes to get 1 or 2 TP on either 99s or 103s. In fact, it takes so long to get all 16 TP on 103s that my HR20's screensaver has sometimes turned on. Does anyone have this problem of slow signal strength readings on 99s and 103s?

Crap! I meant to put this in the "General Directv" forum. Can a mod please move it there (or even the HR20/HR21 forum if more appropriate)? Thanks.

Mine doesn't take 30 seconds per TP, but yes, 99s and 103s do take longer then 99c, 101 and 103c. HR20-700 here.
I'm guessing it takes longer to acquire the signal because they're spotbeam?

Yes it takes longer for me on my HR20-700's, HR21-200, H21-200, and H20-600. But they don't take 30 seconds, maybe 10 to 15.
But I only voted for my HR20's and HR21 because I click vote to fast and did not select my H21 and H20.

OK, maybe 30 seconds is a slight exaggeration, but it does take a long time for me.
Does anyone know how much inactivity before the HR20 screensaver turns on? If I knew that number, I could divide by 16 (the number of TP on 103s) to get a rough idea of how long they take for me (since the screensaver has turned on while I wait for all 16 TP on 103s to fill in).
I don't think 30 seconds is an exaggeration at all. It takes forever, at least on my HR21-700. I'll have to check the HR21-200.

I figured it was because there are so many weak signals from those birds that the receiver is checking and rechecking the weaker ones.

My HR20 is about 10 to 15 seconds per TP
However my HR21 was very slow. Probably over 30 seconds per TP
I thought someone had reported that the signal strength response time had gotten better lately. Not on my end. Still slow. Same for OTA.

I checked my 103s this morning. All but three were 0 signal, but even the three that do have signal take just as long as the TPs that are 0 (including TP 21 which has a 95 reading for me). So maybe this has something to do with the slowness, or maybe not.

My HR21-700 is very slow when getting signal stengths for 99s and 103s.

DirecTV has already confirmed, that yes... it will take longer for the Ka band sats... to get their signal strenght...
That should be pretty consistant accross ALL compatible receivers, and both the SWM and straight dish connections.

I timed the 103s sat this morning and it took about 21 seconds for each TP (or at least the first few as I didn't wait the entire 336 seconds - or 5.6 minutes - for all 16 TPs).

I really didn't have to pay that much attention to the signal strengths until the last couple of months as everything was solid, but since D* keeps playing with the local spot beam now its back to checking all the time.

How do you guys know this?
I looked at the Sat strengths when I first hooked up the antenna, but haven't looked at it since?
Is there a reason to look at it?

I check if there's bad weather just to see how good the alignment of my dish is (with the 2 feet of snow we had last weekend my signals never dropped - good job to the tech that realigned and tightened my dish down after the original installer bungled it!).
I also like to check just out of curiosity.
