On the ViP722 DVR, is there anyway to switch the mode between Single and Dual (multi-room) from the remote or is it only possible from the front of the unit?

You have to punch the button on the front of the receiver to change from single to dual or vice-versa... unless you have a cat like mine which can shut down the whole thing by crawling behind the TV and loosening connections. I might be able to train her to push the button... nah... nobody EVER trained a cat.
