Quick question does the TV/Video button have to be turned on to sat or TV for it to work on a 501 remote. I have an OTA and it didn't seem to be working yesterday. Thanks in advance

Think of the TV/Video button on your Satellite receiver as working exactly like the TV/VCR button on your VCR.

Is that in Sat mode or TV mode?

In Sat mode, the TV/Video will pass either the 501 signal (default on power up) or the OTA (by pressing the button while in Sat mode).

Pressing this button in SAT mode will toggle between sat pic and OTA pass through. I don't know how it works in TV mode, I never tried it there. In VCR mode, it will toggle your VCR's TV/Video mode.

In satellite mode it will switch over to the antenna in connection on the satellite receiver, on tv mode it will switch the outputs of your tv in which accepts several inputs such as Antenna A, Antenna B (coax connectiosn), S-Video, or different inputs, however they are listed, some using RCA connections as well. Big screens 35 inches to the projection tv's has these.

There was a known problem with the tv/video button not working in satellite mode all of the time. Powering the satellite receiver off then back on would allow it to work temporarily again.

That is passing a signal to the RF (coaxial) connector on your TV If you are using composit or S video connectors from your satellite receiver to your tv the button has no effect.

As Jacob mentioned there is still a problem with the tv/video button working. More often then not you will find that it does not function. Especially if you are recording something on Sat.

Rebooting will solve the problem but not for very long. On my system I can force the button on my 508 to fail (especially if I'm recording something) by going into the interactive applications such as Instant Weather.

Does anyone know if doing a soft reboot (holding the power button down until it reboots) is at all damaging to the system or hard drive? Specifically rebooting 2 to 3 times a week?

I do not think it is damaging to the system but not positive on this. I think it may be a software issue seeing that the button works fine when you use it in tv mode.
