View Full Version : First observable instance of snow fade?

I've replied to "snow fade" posts before that I've never seen any issues related to snow on our dish. I think my streak has come to an end. We had some pretty wet and heavy snow here in Minneapolis earlier this week. During the day a few of the Dora/Diego recordings had a lot of pixelation and/or simply ended as only partial recordings. I also had a "tuner 2 searching for signal" on the HR20 when we returned home. A simple menu reset cleared things up.

Why not clear the snow off the dish to see if the HR20 returned to normal instead of a reset?

Because it's a 10/12 pitched roof that was wet and where the dish is located on the back of the house it's a 3 story drop (2 story + walk-out). :eek2:
Also, it was warm enough, that I'm pretty sure most to all of the snow was melted off by the time I returned home.

Totally the snow! I live in St. Paul and the exact same thing 4 or 5 day ago.. wet sticky snow.. dish was out for 12 hours at least until the next morning it melted. Now we are in line for another 6+ inches of heavy wet snow.. so be prepared to lose your signal!
I would be killed if I tried to climb up our steep and snowy roof.
Hrm, had the same sticky stuff here (MN as well) but it did not stick to my slimline.
I think it is mounted so high and up in the winds and such that the snow just does not accumulate on it. I have never had a snow issue in all these years luckily (knocks on wood!).
Can you see your dish from the ground to see if it is snow?

I can see it from the ground, but didn't look the other day. I'll go check in the morning, depending how much of the stuff we have by the time I need to head to work. This is my first winter with the slimline. I haven't ever had a "snow fade" event. Not sure if it's the slimline or just the right type of snow that we haven't had in years.

What is snow? :)
Sorry couldn't resist...
Glad my dish is on a pole in the yard. I essentially have a 3 story roof as well. I would just have to go without TV until it melted the next day :)

When I installed mine, I put it at ground level so I'd be able to clear snow from it, but in 6 years, I can't say I've ever had a snow that stuck to the dish.
I think I read a post once that said you could spray the dish with something like Pam, and it would keep snow from sticking to it, but I can't imagine that being a lasting effect.

Oh, I see. Snow fade issues usually go away on their one once the snow is removed/melted, so that's why it's strange to me that a menu reset fixed your issues. That makes me think it was not snow related.
Up here in Cleveland we had some of that industrial strength wet snow stuck to my slimline dish also which caused a loss of signal. I got out my extension pole & brush to clean if off. Just a side note the major storm just about 2 weeks prior no signal loss, I guess it was not the industrial variety,
Super sticky stuff the last few days and TONS of it. Looked at my dish and not a spec on it. I have no idea why, but I have never had a dish that is attracted to snow. The roof around it had a good 4-6" on it.

I use aircraft wing deice fluid BFGoodrich ICEX.
works great, 2 applications a year. I am in area that the dish gets pounded with snow so I had to try something. got tired of wiping 3 inches off it every 4 hours.
