Do you think they will add custom color schemes to the R15/16 like the old receivers?
Also can they color code the guide like they used to? News one color, live event, series, and movies would all have their own color in the guide.

Never see it happening.

There are too many graphic overlays, shadowing, curves, ect...
Makes it a little more difficult... the older receivers, when it was really just two collors... the base graphic collor and the text color.

They are doing some shading on the channel numbers, but I don't see it going much further then that.

My old RCA DRD450 receiver had a dozen dopey color schemes, different "screen savers" for the music channels, and a million other goofy options. It even had a thing called a "pick list" where you could add ALL the screwy options to something similar to a favorites list. Plus, FOUR DIFFERENT USERS could choose any and all of the options for THEIR personal list too!! I like playing with options and things so it took me a whole evening to set up all the options and lists to my liking.

Unfortunately today people have very short attention spans. They don't like options. They like to plug something in and have it work with the "default" options. Devices that actually need the user to do something when they first get it often include "quick start" guides in addition to the full user manual so people can do the absolute least amount of configuring.

When I first got that RCA receiver I couldn't believe it. It looked NOTHING like the menu system/guide on my Hughes receiver. I couldn't believe both of them were for the same DirecTV channels and dish!! There was no way back then that DirecTV could have had a "customer service" channel like they do now (201) which gives demonstrations on how to operate the DirecTV receivers and remotes (even the remotes were totally different between the Hughes and the RCA!)

So someone decided that ALL menus, guides, remotes, and basically the DirecTV user experience should be the same to simplify things and allow that customer service channel and the installer to be able to tell new customers how everything works. Unfortunately, it meant lots fewer user-changeable options (like color schemes).

I kind of like it either way. Most customers probably like it the present way. :D

Unfortunately, given the fact that we're having such a tough time determining a first run from a repeat, channels I get from those I don't and correctly marking episodes of a series link with the recording icon, I'm sorry to say the color coding of the guide would merely produce a psychedelic effect with no relevance whatsoever to program content.

On a non guide issue, I'd sure like to see the "previous" button toggle between any two previous programs be they live, recorded or a combination thereof. A buffer that remains paused when utilizing the "previous" function would likewise be greatly appreciated and is sorely missed.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm happier than not with the R15, I simply wish these items would work correctly. Notice I didn't say as intended as these "annoyances" have been around for quite some time and the unit may in fact be operating as intended.

Jeez I'm sorry I asked, I guess you want nothing new until some minor snags (that may only be 1 person's idea of a snag) are worked out.... I could have compiled a whole littany of things, DLB, MRV, OTA subchannel, Networking capbility, some kind of On Demand service for the SD DVR, Maybe the R17 or whatever, if ever SD DVR is next..... But I asked a simple question and Earl gave a simple answer maybe I should of just PM'd him (I don't think all the PM's would be appreciated by Earl). There is an R15 "Wishlist" you could throw all that on. The way I determine first runs and repeats is I record them all, if I remeber watching something it is a repeat, if I don't remeber watching it it's a first run. I suppose I could stick colored cellophane on my TV to get the desire effects....

You misunderstand me sir.... :)

I too would like the color coded guide, really liked the way the Hughes box displayed it. Merely pointing out that currently the R15 programmers are having a heck of a time getting the guide logic down.

Now about the cellophane... Why didn't I think of that!

I get that feeling sometimes too. I don't eat Cheerios but "would you like to keep/ delete this program" when it's only half over has the same effect. ;)
