View Full Version : Total newbie question: Are LNBs interchangeable?
I have one dish 1000 set up with LNBs pointed at 110 and 119, and a wing dish 1000 pointing at 129. Are they interchangeable?
One reason I ask is that the 1000 with the two LNBs is in a place where I will definitely lose 119 in a month or two. I have another pole where 119 was mounted, but the pole diameter is larger. Otherwise, I would just move the whole 1000 there a realign.
I know I will lose 119 because a.) I lost it before and b.) I used the sun-location trick to figure out which one I lost and why. My installer promised to return and move both to the other pole with the hopes of co-locating the 129 LNB there.

Yes they are interchangable, but the 1000 has a Twin (_)(_) and a dual (_) on it.
There is no way you can get 110 and 129 on the 1000 and 119 on a side dish using the current lnb's, because 119 is the middle lnb and you cannot seperate the twin into two parts.
You could receive 119 and 129 on the twin and 110 on the dual.
Being a newbie - best leave this to your installer.

Why not get a 1 5/8" pipe adaptor, attach that to the larger pole and mount the Dish 1000 on that to get all three sats? They are readily available on Ebay.
I think I had an adapter like that at one time, but a friendly installer tossed it in his truck when he was switching things around :) I was pretty sure those adapters were available, but wanted to be certain I was not dis-remembering something! My original reason for the question was that if my installer does not show to clean things up, I will do exactly what you said. Except I cannot currently get a one-dish solution.
Jim5506 - One of the dishes is a SuperDish, the other just a 1000. Neither of them has a twin - each has 3 separate, distinct LNB mounts. The SD has three mounts, but just LNBs mounted for 110 and 119. The other has three mounts, but just one LNB sitting right in the middle, but the rig is pointed at 129.
I cannot get 129 on the SD - there is a big tree in the way. When the leaves come in, 119 will go away, too. I do have an arbor service scheduled to come trim dead limbs and a couple of selected live ones to enhance my 129 prospects from another location.
My last installer wanted me to drop the big tree for a one-dish solution. I am trying to create other options. I get my LIL off 129 - used to be 105. I installed a CM4228 in the attic last week, and now can get analog locals OTA, so I am pretty sure I will be able to get HD locals as well - they all come from the same place. That way, I can play with location of a wing dish (the 1000) for 129, even after the leaves come in. If I can find a clear spot, and I think I have, then all will be good.
I know if I had a Sat-Buddy everything would be pretty easy :) I went cheap and just got the meter, battery pack and compass from Sadoun.
Would I first line up best I can with compass, use meter to get best signal, then check on my Dish receiver for satellite ID? Does the receiver have the ability to ID the satellite?

Your receiver's Point Dish screen will identify the satellite(s) you are getting signal from. Just play with the Satellite setting - if you don't get signal, you'll either get "Not Locked - Name Not Acquired" or "Wrong Sat - {sat name}".
Adjust your dish for signal from 119 first. Then tune for your other satellite locations.
