I recently added a second HD DVR in my house. On my bill, there was an additional $199 charge for this, even though there was no charge for the install itself.

Accordin got the CSR, this was a "one time HD DVR Upgrade fee," even though I'm leasing the receiver. So here's my questions:

1. Was anyone else ever heard of this?

2. Would I have been better off just buying my receiver from Best Buy, or would I have gotten hit with this fee regardless?

1. Yes, we have all heard of it--it's a standard fee

2. I believe it would have been $169 if you bought it at Costco probably similar at Best Buy

That fee if for the HD DVR hardware. When you upgraded I would have imagined the CSR discussed the cost with you and the $199 fee. On the other hand, if you discussed some other financial arrangement, i.e. free upgrade, then this fee should not be on your bill and you should visit with a CSR about fixing it.

Got it. I got bounced around to four different CSRs when I put the order in (got a number of new people who didn't know how to do the order), and the final one actually said its "$199 for the new HD DVR". I assumed that just meant that it was a purchase price for the DVR itself, not the equipment. My bad.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't want to call to complain unnecessarily.
