Hey,all. Cool contest. Thanks to all involved.I have a question for y'all.Has anyone experienced a really loud noise from the 501 box?.Sounds like a fan noise to me but I guess it could be hard drive. It continues for about 5-10 minutes after power off. Some threads touched on this when I searched but no specific answer that I could find.Customer support told me this is normal & if it's too loud I should take advantage of the UHF sender & put the box in another room! How's that for fixing the problem?
Anyway,I would appreciate any input anyone may have. Thanks & good luck.

Hello Kev, and welcome to DBSTalk! :hi:
The fans in the 50x receivers can definitely be pretty loud, and usually either run all of the time or shut off after putting the receiver in standby mode in 10 of 15 minutes. So, if your noise sounds like a fan, it's normal. If it's more of a screeching noise, it's not normal.

Hi,Mark.I guess it sounds like a fan,But it's been getting louder & louder until now it intrudes on my viewing pleasure. Is there any way to find out the specs on the fan & replace it myself, you think?
P.s.Is that 61.5 N or 61.5 S-there's a lot more water @ 61.5 S at that Longitude in which case you must have an awesome submarine!
Cheers, Kev

Kev, I suppose you could open the box up and replace the fan with a quieter one, but that would void your warrenty. Other than that, though, really the only things you can do is make sure your 50x is in a well ventilated area - not in an audio rack, and definitely nothing stacked on it or it stacked on anything. And you could use a small fan to blow air on it.
And that's 61.5 degrees east. :)

Kev - call Dish and add the extended warrenty to your account for $1.99 a month. It'll take affect 30 days after you add it, and will cover all of your Dish equipment. If anything needs to be replaced, all you'll be charged will be $14.95 for shipping.
kev - take mark's advice. i am about to do the same. my 501 has gotten louder and louder. we moved it into the basement but when we are down there, it's terrible. it's a loud grinding high pitch type of sound. it's about 15 months old. i would not open my 501 and void any repairs which these guys really seem to need.
