View Full Version : Picture Breakup on Local HD Channels

I started to have an occassional problem with local HD stations where the picture would turn gray along with the audio being interupted. This would last for a split second and then return to normal, although rarely the picture would freeze and the audio would be fine. It was very intermittent at first and seemed to occur on windy days only. I would also sometimes get the 771, searching for satellite error.

I have an HR20 and HR10 hooked up to the same tv. I also have an HR21 hooked up to a different tv. I was seeing this on both HR2x units which led me to believe that there was likely a dish alignment problem although the signal strength did not seem all that bad. To try and make a long story short, it got to a point where I could no longer watch March Madness in HD because it was breaking up so badly. At this point I was desparate.

I scheduled a service call along with the free upgrade of the HR10 to an HR21. Today there is no wind and everything seemed to be fine before the tech came to switch out the old dvr and perform a dish aligment. An additional brace was put on the dish for more support along with the alignment resulting in the signal strength going up about 20% overall. He aslo swapped out the old dvr. Soon after he left, I started to see breaking up of the video signal again on local HD channels where the picture turned gray and audio dropped, although there is no wind at all. I checked the signal strength and it was still the same as he left it.

So now I have a new HR21 and my older HR20 hooked up to the same TV in my living room. I do not see this problem on the new HR21 at all. I swapped my wiring with the two units to see if the problem would follow the receiver or not. It definately followed the HR20 indicating a likely HR20 problem. I have a new one being sent. I want to see if there have been other reported issues with this subject to see if the feeling is a new receiver will correct my problem.

I believe I had two separate issues where there was definately a slight alignment problem but also something going on with my HR20.

Do you have an AT-9 dish with a Calamp LNB?

Also, is your HR20 an HR20-700?

It is an HR20-100

Don't know the answer to your question. All I can say is that it is a 3LNB dish that was installed probably about 10 months ago when local HD channels arrived in my area.

I've started to get the same exact problems. My local HD channels (out of Boston) now show up as a gray screen (no video) when the unit comes on. If I do some channel switching for a minute or so, they seem to come back -- but with lots of pixellation and audio drops. Also, I'm getting more and more 771 notices on HD movie and sports channels.

I have two HR20-700's (the problem occurs on both) that have been working reasonably well up to this point.

Assume you mean 5 LNB, which admittedly looks like it has 3 LNB's. (The big one in the center is a triple feed horn.) The reason we ask is that there is a specific issue with HD locals, the HR20-700, and the Calamp AT-9 dish LNB. Not your facts.

Your Harrisburg locals are on DirecTV10, which will appear in the lower half of the 103(s) signal strength menu page. So you should have at least one strong tp in the 17-24 and 25- 32 rows. You're probably correct: you had 2 problems. One of them's fixed and you've still got one bad HR20-100.

You may have gotten blown out of alignment. Please post your signal strengths tp-by-tp on the 103(c) satellite, one tuner only, unless they're substantially different, from the View Signal Strength menu page under Menu Button > --- > --- > Satellite & Antenna
