Has anyone figured out the rules for when recordings are deleted?

My disk was pretty full, 2 % available, when I noticed it was not recording a show on one of my series links. I quickly did a manual record and was able to salvage most of what I wanted to record but, I'm wondering what the rules are.

When the series option choice is "Record until disk full" I can almost understand why my series link did not record. (There was enough room for me to record it manually.) What do the triangle symbols with the exclamation point in them mean? I assumed it meant that those programs would be deleted to make way for new recordings. But, what are the rules?

Will an older program be deleted to make room for a new one if it's not a series link? If I schedule a movie to record a week from now and there's not enough disk space will it delete an older program?

What's the algorithm Kenneth?

Yes, the yellow exclamation icon indicates that a recording is on the chopping block when the DVR needs to make room for new recordings. I'm pretty sure that it will always delete the oldest recording within a SL or just in the general list, but I yield to my other knowledgeable forum members here for the complete answer.

Thanks for the response PoitNarf. Due to the underwhelming response to my question I'm guessing everyone else has this figured out.

My best guess is this:

Series links will never delete an older recording.
Manual or one time recordings will delete older recordings to make room.

If this is the logic then I'll have to be real careful to leave enough, (how much is enough?), room for my SL to record.
