View Full Version : Are there certain receivers that DON'T require phone lines??
I'm more familiar with the R15 and HR20/HR21's, but I have an old Samsung SIR-300W that I'd like to reactivate for a remote room, but don't have a phone line in that room. Does it require a phone line hooked up??

None of them require one.

All of them require them!
edit-----
Phone line is required so that directv knows that your not "sharing" your service.
Okay...which is true...?? I'd really not like to run a phone line, but will if I have to...

Is the Samsung just a SD receiver? If so you do not. DIRECTV says you need to have a phone line connected to all receivers but you don't unless you want to order PPV from the remote.

No IRD needs a phone connection. PPV service with remote will just be deactivated on D* side.
They push phone lines for the impulse PPV orders and some things that are yet to be implemented ( such as monitoring what you are watching).
I have done tons of installs where people have no land line and use cell phones. It just gets noted on the account.
If you do want a phone connection, an easy route would be wireless phone jacks.

It is in your sa ... but is it enforced? Not really. I wouldn't worry about it. You've done everything else right though sphinx why not this too?

Well thats the point isn't it..."no land line no problem" but it has to get noted that way yes?
This (the phone line needed) has VERY little to do with PPV and an impulse buy, but MUCH more to do with sharing services!!

No, Directv would like you to be hooked to a phoneline. But it is not required and there is no costs if you don't. The only things you wont have are access to PPV and CID.

I live on a farm and the receiver was to go into a remote garage/workshop that has no phoneline into it. Could a phone line be ran? Yes. Could a wireless phone jack be used? Perhaps. I simply asked if older receivers required a phone line to even function.
Anyhow, I've put off any plans as the old receiver was deactivated for a reason: it's defective. And I don't really wanna pay $90 ($70 for the receiver, $20 for shipping) to get a new receiver.

Ahh, thats kinda a question I had too. related to the phone line. All of the rooms hav e a phone line, however, in our kitchen, the phone is up on the wall. I planned just to not have that one plugged into the phone, however I am getting the drift the box wont function sans phoneline.

More of a comment than a question....and I fully enjoy ALL your imput on this forum. I have learned from you muchly.
Your sa(service agreement) mandates that you have a phone line connected to each of your receivers. Sd or Hd.
Its not a big deal I was just counteracting those who say that it doesn't matter. Well it may matter.
Anyway I wouldn't worry about it and ENJOY!

Yes, it's in the service agreement (has carried over since the early days). No, Directv doesn't care. They know the would lose millions if they enforced that prehistoric policy. The only time it was ever enforced from an installation point of view was with the DirecTivos because those boxes had to phone home during the setup.

It matters because they don't wont signal theft...first and foremost....has nothing to do with and an antiqueded process but at the same time they don't want to harass good customers so they play it cool...

Just because you guys have facts that are correct does not mean the phone issue is dead. The HSPs use the phone issue to screw installers. IF a certain percentage of installations turn up to be "non responders" when DTV tests the phone to receiver connection..........the HSPs provide less money to the guy who did th installation. As the kid on South Park said: *******s! (Bas*****)
I just got in from a phone repair........I know I will be paid. I must have passed hundreds of DTV customers I installed in the past several years. All are in service but every once in a while I passed one that I never got paid for.

How long does the customer need to keep the dial tone connected before the installer is in the clear? 7days, 2 weeks, 2 months? I think most here don't want to screw their installers and would be willing to help if they knew the facts.

I agree that is why they want it connected to a phone line. However, they will not disconnect service to your account or any of your receivers if it is not connected to the POTS line. If they did, they would be disconnecting 30-40% (rough estimate) of their customers.

Anyway I wouldn't worry about it and ENJOY!Thank you, and I fully understand the service agreement's "requirement" of a phone line to each receiver -- each of my four receiver currently have phone lines. I only questioned for my situation. The weather's getting warmer here in Minnesota (....kinda...) and I was looking forward to possibly being able to watch baseball in the workshop (really an old barn that has a pool table, make-shift bar and garage), but didn't want to pay $90 for a SD, non-DVR receiver (and probably still need to purchase a separate dish for the barn as well). Having to run a phone line would probably be a "deal breaker", as it's about a 200 foot run from the main house and I don't feel like burying a phone line that far.
I also wondered about it for a co-worker who has no home phone line at all -- lives on cell phones. How can/does DirecTV deal with these prospective subscribers?

A week should be good enough. Unless it has changed recently, they usually do it in the first 72 hours.

First off, HSPs only count IRDs that are FLagged as phone line. They understand this is a cell society and that people that are cell only (single people mostly) arent going to add and extra 70$ a month for a landline.
Secondly, Syphix instead of the extra 5$ charge a month for something u may rarely use in the workshop, why not just mirror it off another reciever that is in a bedroom and might not be used at the time.

He probably doesn't want to bury 200' of cable either.

16 wrongs make a right eh? :p
TigersFanJJ: correct. The $5/month is not a huge deal as in the summer, I really AM in the garage/workshop a lot. Enough to justify the charge, at least. I've spent $5 in worse ways...
I may just bring the laptop out there and Slingbox back to a receiver instead, though. I exaggerated the length just a bit (it's probably closer to 150 ft), so I'm hoping the wi-fi reaches! Otherwise, I may just run one cable out there: a Cat5.

syphix if you dont bury the cable yourself, you will PAY someone to do it and 150 ft might be pushing it. If you have an extra dish or pay the tech 20$ he will most likely mount an independant dish on your workshop.(thats what i would do)
the 20-30 bucks they pay for an additioal IRD is paltry for the amount of work the Tech might have to do to make u happy
