Hi:

I am a DirectTV customer. I had their HD Service. Until now I didn't have any international programming but I am adding it today. The installer is outside my house installing the dish.

He seems new or inexperienced. I have 4 Satelite wires coming from the existing Dish into my house. The installer was telling me that he needs a fifth line coming into my house for the international programming. I have never heard this before.

I had dish network with international and domestic programming. They had installed their multiswitch outside the house and 4 wires coming into my house were enough.

When I asked the installer why he couldn't install the multiswitch outside the house he wasn't certain. He told me that it should work but I want to make sure that I have correct setup.

Can anyone tell me what to do? How many DSS wires should be coming into my house for international and domestic programming?

Thanks

My $.02, since you asked.

Sit back and let him do his job. Verify you have the programming before you sign the paperwork.

Don't be surprised if you find another even larger dish at the end of that cable. Many international channels require the "international" dish that gets combined with the four from your behemoth dish. You should get a WB68 if you don't already have one.

5 lines must go into the multiswitch.
Where you have the multiswitch put is up to you.

The bottom line..............
If you have service with a slimline (5 LNB) dish and only four active lines, they'll need to add a WB68 (wide band) switch into which the four currently active lines will be connected along with a fifth line from the international dish. The switch can be mounted either indoors or out. Unless you really are dead set against another hole, I'd mount it indoors.

If you currently have more than four active lines, there will already be a 6x8 switch installed somewhere. The line from the international dish will have to be connected to it, wherever it is.

If you don't have a slimline dish, the same layout as above applies with the exception of being able to use a standard 6x8 switch instead of the WB68 (slimline (5 LNB) switch).

Hi:

The installer is installing a new WB68. He is going to install WB68 outside my house. The 5 lines will run into the multiswitch and 4 lines from WB68 will run into my house.
The installer was telling me that if I had 5 lines coming into my house then he would have installed the multiswictch inside the house.
Is it worth it for me to run a 5th cable into to he house and then get the multiswitch moved into my basement.

Thanks

I would have him mount it indoors simply to eliminate the possible chance of moisture causing a problem.

I asked him to run the fifth line into the house and install the multiswitch inside the house. This will prevent moisture issues and also give me the ability to add more receivers in future.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my questions.

The install was supposed to show up between 8:00 and 12:00. I missed the gym and sat at home. At 12:15 I called and I was told that he will be at my place by 2:00 pm. I got a call at 1:30 and I was told that he will be there at 3:00 pm.

After spending nearly 1 hour outside the house I was told that his ladder was not long enough and it was too windy for him to climb up on my roof. So I lost my entire day but he didn't even install the international dish. The installer was from Premier Communications. I had a tough time getting my initial install with them.

The installer was a nice guy and I wouldn't want anyone getting hurt so I am fine with rescheduling the install. I just hope that it will go better next time.

Yeah, I can't say that I blame him (the installer). Already running late on your jobs for the day. You try to get started on the job, but the customer keeps interrupting because (although he is clueless as to what needs to be done) he doesn't think you know what you are doing. Then the customer can't make up his mind about where he wants the switch to be located, no doubt causing more delays. I wouldn't be surprised if the installer figured it would be easier to just cut ties to this job to keep from losing too much money on it.

I agree that the installer was probably fairly new to the job. After listening to where the customer wanted the equipment located and deciding if I could accommodate his wishes, I would have told the customer, "I'm installing the dish here and the multiswitch there. I'll be inside in about 45 minutes to set up your receivers." If it wasn't how the customer had hoped, I'd give my reasons why and wouldn't leave it open for discussion. If the customer came out later wanting the switch moved because someone on the internet said it would be better if it was located on the inside of the house, I'd let him know it would be a custom charge for me to move it or he and the person that told him this could move it themselves for free.

If the OP would have taken the advice in my first reply, I believe he would have his international programming right now. I know it may be taken a different way, but I'm not trying to be an a**. I doubt anyone here would like for someone to try to tell you how to do your job when that person has absolutely no idea what you are doing.

With the exceptions of Jadeworld and the Spanish channels, all DirecTV international programming comes from the 95 satellite. so International services require a 2nd dish.

Because there will be a second dish there will be 5 cable runs to the multiswitch. 4 from the main dish and 1 from the secondary dish.

In order to combine the signal from the 2 dishes a multiswitch is required, even if you only have 1 receiver.

How late is the gym open till ?
Couldn't you just go to the gym after the installer left ?

hehateme's (op) initial post has a time stamp on my system of 5:29am. I have my cp set for Tokyo time with DST correction enabled. Tokyo is GMT+9. MN (with DST) I believe is GMT-5. Therefore, I calculated that MN should be 14 hours behind Tokyo.
