Explain the Swap you are doing?
The receiver, will get what ever programming the card is assigned to.
But using a system that is assigned to another persons account, in another location... is a violation of the TOS for DirecTV

Welcome to DBSTalk.
I'm afraid the best answer is... none.
We try not to discuss things that could be considered "hacking" or at least a misuse of DirecTV equipment.
Moving a receiver to another location/account would fall under this. [Sorry]

So this guy I know is in violation or should I say his sister?
He has DirecTV through his sister's account. He told me that the the receiver he uses is in her name and at his house and he pays her 5 bucks a month for the lease.
I told him that I thought that was illegal but he claims the installer told him it was okay.
He and his sister live roughly 5 miles apart, as the crow flies!

You are correct. He should have his own seperate account.

No law is being broken... so it isn't "illegal"
But it is a violation of the TOS for his Sisters account

signal theft. Direct does prosecute for that, and has won on more than one occasion

I am not so certain no law is being broken, depending on how tightly the wording of stealing satellite services laws are written.
I do not know either way, just adding to the considerations. :)
Cheers,
Tom
Although what he is doing is completely wrong and violates the DirecTV contract terms, I do not think it amounts to stealing satellite signals because the box and access card are legitimate and paid for per the sister's account. There is no theft in that instance and I'm unaware of any law or ordinance that says something similar to DirecTV's TOS that you can't do this. But again, it's a breach of the contract terms, which is a civil law matter. It might also amount to civil fraud against the brother and even civil conspiracy against both. Again, it does not matter whether it amounts to a crime as it is just wrong to do it.
