SPRINGFIELD -- Satellite television service subscribers in the Springfield market lost their access to local TV stations' signals on Thursday morning. Lightning hit the KY3 tower on West Sunshine Street about 10:30 a.m. The uplinks for all the stations in the market are on that tower.

The same lightning bolt also knocked out KY3's Internet connection, meaning some features of KY3.com may not be working, such as KY3 Live Doppler radar. Technicians are working to fix the equipment that was damaged.

Lightning can knock out all of their broadcast capabilities just as easy as they can knock out the satellite uplinks.

Agreed, but with OTA, you can tune to another local station (odds are, lightning isn't going to take them all out). With Sat, all locals are uplinked from one place, so you lose all locals at once if that site is comprimised.

Don't forget, that we would need the ability to scan for OTA stations, just in case they go to a temp channel.
