View Full Version : Stanley Cup - Versus - HD
If you look at the EPG and Versus web site, there will be no HD telecasts of NHL playoff games Thursday and Friday next week.
Why?
Masters highlights from the Golf Channel.
Does Versus have exclusivity for these telecasts or will they be available on their appropriate RSN?

Versus has some exclusivity of certain games. Last year an addition feed was put up on one of the HD overflow channels in the 90s for the extra games. The cable co's put the extra games on Mojo

The NHL's updated schedule shows games in HD on Thursday and Friday of this week, contrary to what has been reported here.
According to NHL.com, Thursday's Nashville-Detroit and Ducks-Stars games are both in HD. Also, the schedule shows Friday's Capitals-Flyers game on Versus in HD, but not the Avalanche-Wild game.
Anyone know if this is accurate and if D* subscribers are going to get the games in HD in light of the shared Vs./Golf channel situation?

For the Philly vs Washington games they will be blacked out on vs. in the Philadelphia market. I am not sure about Comcast Mid-Atlantic whic carries Caps games.
"Locally, Comcast SportsNet has announced that it will carry Games 1, 3, 4, 6 and 7 - all of the games not on NBC. As for Versus, it will be blacked out in the Philadelphia area. "

That any NHL playoff game would not be in HD is a major failure for the NHL, the RSNs and D*.i, myself, have been pondering whether this will be an all-hd playoff year. that would be swell! but then...
According to NHL.com, Thursday's Nashville-Detroit and Ducks-Stars games are both in HD. subject to blackout rules, i'm sure. being in los angeles, and being a ducks fan, i'm a'feared! i'm sure all the regional stuff will be blacked out (philly in philly, jersey in jersey, etc.) as usual.
there ya have it. i think everyone here agrees that blackout rules are confusing and sucky. all blackouts should be lifted (at least) during the playoffs!

Those of us in Detroit are stuck with Fox Sports Detroit, and they only cover home games in HD. I think Versus is putting the road games (3 & 4 at least) in HD, and Detroit locals will have to suffer without it. The NHL really has to fix this...hockey in HD vs. SD is night and day.

New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils (Devils Feed) 7:00 pm 771
Colorado Avalanche at Minnesota Wild 9:00 pm 772

NHL.com's schedule lists Weds. night's games in HD (Senators/Penguins & Sharks/Flames). Same for Thursday's Detroit/Nashville and Ducks/Stars games, and Friday's Flyers/Capitals games. The only VERSUS games not in HD appear to be games 1 & 2 of the Colorado/Minnesota series.
This is exactly why Vs. and Golf need their own HD feeds, they need to split up the one channel that they share now.
What the NHL needs to do is get back on ESPN as fast as they can.
Then there will be NO sharing a HD channel with golf highlights.
I did hear that the NHL MAY go back to ESPN for the NBC type coverage.
One can hope.

What are the restrictions on the RSN feeds being used if the game is on Versus? I know there are blackout rules restricting the same programming from being shown, but I think you could make a pretty strong argument that an SD feed and an HD feed are separate, different programming. Any word on if D* will be able to show RSNs, TSN, or the Vs. HD feed on 95, as I understand has been done in the past?

They sure did. I am not positive if the deal was for "exclusive" rights ~ meaning that ESPN may or may not be able to get some games during the contract, but I would guess that won't happen.
Business decision - let's put our product on an outlet the non-NHL fan doesn't know about or doesn't receive. Then, let's continue to sign contract extensions with this outlet that only offers 1 channel. Should sound familar? Sure does - the NHL did the same thing in the '80's with Sportschannel. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice and shame on me.
Oh yeah, that HD stuff that is the wave of the future and makes our product look exceptional. Well, our outlet shares their HD channel with the Golf channel so certain nights the product won't be shown in HD!

The exclusive is typically with the RSNs. So if you live in Detroit you'll need to watch the Wings game on FSN Detroit (in HD no less) and the Versus feed should be blacked out.
But if you live outside Detroit (like I live in West Michigan about 150 miles west of Detroit) I'm not in the Wings "home" market but FSN Detroit is still my RSN and thus I could watch either feed. One nice thing about not living in a major top market city is I never get blacked out of anything. :)
For those with CI I would think you could watch either feed, FSN Detroit on CI or Versus. The Versus exclusive is only in the last 2 rounds I believe which would force you to watch their feed no matter where you live.

I agree, but sometimes you'd be surprised how far those blackout rules are extended. I was never blacked out of a hockey game until the NHL network came on and they black me out on Flyer games. I've been a CI subscriber for 7 years and had never been blacked out of a game before, regardless of who was playing or where it was being played.

I could be wrong, but I believe it is in Free Preview mode through 4/11 then you would have to subscribe at around $59. This would give you rd 1 and 2 games (all games after that are on VS or NBC). This would also probably pre-qualify you for the early bird special next season, should you decide to subscribe for the full year (they will auto bill you.)

I am not in any team's market, it's strange. I'd figure I'd be claimed by some team but there isn't one within 700 miles. The FSN Pittsburgh feed of the Senators/Penguins game 1 is blacked out so out of market folks (as expected) have to watch it on Versus. Nice to see that VS is picking up the HD feed of the CBC Flames/Sharks game. IIRC last year we would occasionally get the CBC via VS on channel 95 but it was an upconvert.
So... VS can get the CBC HD feed and the NHL network televised several TSN HD games. Why can't CI provide the HD versions from these outlets? It's a shame that the Avs and Wild are only available in SD tonight (and not a good feed either, looks like a dirty sock is covering the camera lense.)

My understanding is that those in the CSNBA home market should have that feed, and not have access to the CBC coverage on Versus. The only thing I can't be certain of, though logically it would make sense is that it would apply to HD feeds as well. Luckily, as someone in CSNBA's home market, I tuned into Versus until CSNBA switched over and 654-1 had the game. Let's hope they at least split box the feed tonight if the baseball runs long.

Just to clarify, the VS HD feed was also blacked out for us D* customers living within the Sharks market territory. The VS SD feed went black first, followed a few seconds later on the HD feed. Actually, those on Dish with VS/Golf got golf as it says in the guide data.
Here is the thing that hasn't been mentioned. Comcast has separate channels for Versus HD and Golf HD but only makes that available on their own Comcast systems (imagine that). The combined VS/Golf HD channel is only available to everyone else. On some cable systems the Versus HD feed might be shown on the Mojo channel. So DirecTV was able to get that feed and show it instead of Golf. Not quite sure how they got away with it but they did. So far anyway.

So, once again, my DVR manages to record a blacked out game. This time, on VS.
Question time:
1) What is the definitive channel schedule (including HD or SD) for this series for the Baltimore market?
2) Did anyone find the answer to 1) in one place (URL, paper, etc.). I want to know where such information is easily found so I don't have to ask questions like this in the future, after the game is over. I thought I had it figured out, but clearly, was wrong.
3) In general, is there a way to get the DVR to record the non-blacked out game reliably based on guide data?
4) An aside: my wife and I can't figure out why the D* version of the guide on the HD DVR (HR20-700) won't let you look backward in time for what a particular channel had shown. It is a pain to go to the history on the record menu to figure out that the absence of something must (but maybe it was human error on our part) indicate that show wasn't on after all. The Tivo guides do this, and you can quickly determine if an expected show wasn't on after all, or if it was a repeat, etc.
This would not have helped tonight (I knew immediately it was a blackout issue), but just wondering...
TIA,
Jerry

This would not have helped tonight (I knew immediately it was a blackout issue), but just wondering...
TIA,
Jerry
For the rest of the Flyers series you will want to record CSN - MA and not VS.
The local rsn- CSN-MA in round one is your only option.
Of course the game Sunday will be on NBC.

Why again does ESPN want nothing to do with hockey?
Because during the year of the lockout ESPN found out they didn't need hockey since they got double and triple the ratings by showing women's basketball and poker instead. So when the NHL came back ESPN wasn't in the mood to really pay all that much and Versus offered more money. Problem is nobody to this day knows what Versus is or how to find it. The causual viewer at least knows what ESPN is.
NHL really killed themselves with the lockout.
Anybody have any problems with the CGY/SJ Versus HD feed Sunday night?
I got some freeze-ups on my HR21.

I have an HR20, no problems here. Probably an HR21 issue. A lot of people are having issues with theirs as well.
