View Full Version : How hot should an HR20-700 run?
I'm working on an issue with case management and the agent told me his HR20-700 typically runs at 140 degrees. I previously had a HR20-100 that never got above 98/99 degrees so his answer seemed suspect to me. Any idea how hot these boxes can run before they are affected by the internal temp?

Mine runs in the 125 to 130 range .. I never see any issues that I would blame on temperature.

140 degrees seems pretty hot. Highest I've ever seen any of the units I own (4) is 127. Will 140 make a difference? Depends on where the thermal cutoffs are set by the manufacturer.

My HR20-700 also runs about 126.
If you have one running hotter, it seems to be not getting enough air. Do you have it buried in an equipment rack or enclosed some how?

I'm with Ken S... 140 seems pretty hot... I wouldn't be surprised to see problems with a temp like that...

No, this is in an open air environment. The box would race up to 125 within 5 minutes of a cold start and then lockup. It's a refurb and it seems like the internal fan doesn't turn on.

This doesn't sound good and I'd be looking to have it replaced.

Keane, I think you're likely right. If you have an external fan you can wire up to suck air out of it from the top you can test your theory.

Mine runs at about 125 to 129.

Yes, if possible it would be nice to test this just to give yourself some peace of mind. It does sound like you have a heat related problem that is most likely causing the CPU to simply get the wrong answer on some calculations and crashing the system.

121 - 124 for my HR20-700's. As far as comparing them to your -100's, I guess they were designed to be more efficient, as far as thermal management goes, as mine run around the 99-102 range.
My HR20's are in an equipment rack and when I shut off the air going into the enclosure (only openings in the rear for exhaust), the highest the -700's ever get to is 129.
So, the way I see it, to reach a temp of 140 means that there is something seriously wrong going on.

Or the sensor is just located in a different place.

DTV is already sending me yet another replacement that I should have today so I'm not going to bother. If I encounter the same issue, then I will give it a shot.

That may very well be true, but to the touch, the -100's are significantly cooler than the 700's. I have no idea what the insides look like of each model, but the vents are located differently from the 700 and 100. Perhaps this, along with the internal fan placement, has a lot to do with why one model runs cooler than the other.
Just to add, mine typically runs about 127, with no problems.
Mine has a laptop cooler on top of it and it runs at about 106.

Yeah I just got a couple of laptop chillpads for the HR20-700 and PS3 after moving all my equipment into a closet. Even without them though I haven't seen the HR above 125 yet, despite not being in totally "open air" like it was before.
