I called D* yesterday to ask some questions about the new programming packages they offer because I still have one of the older packages with my HR10-250. Without even asking, the CSR mentions she may be able to offer the HD/DVR upgrade for FREE! I'm all for that, please check. She does, and comes back with a yes. Receiver, dish, professional install, and shipping all for free. Maybe D* is going back to this, but everything I have read here lately I thought the upgrade would cost around $99. She even threw in a small HD add on package for 6 months. Install is set for April 20th, can't wait to see all these extra HD's. (minus the DLB  )
Is D* going back to free upgrades or did I just get lucky?

Back to free upgrades? No.
BUT... you have an HR10-250. It's in DirecTV's best interests to get as many of those out of the equation as possible. So of course, they're happy to replace it for you!
I'm guessing your free DVR will be a refurbished one, not a new one.

Well I'm actually keeping my HR10-250 for the DLB of course. ;)
Plan to use both.

That's really of no concern, it's not like I'm buying the box.
Besides, from what I have read here, the chances of getting a turd are about the same, new or refurbed.

But what dmurphy is saying is it is more than likely if you didn't have the HR10 and you already an DirecTV HD receiver, then you wouldn't be getting this upgrade for free or another DirecTV HD/DVR receiver for free specifically. They want as many people upgraded to new equipment.
Good for you on your upgrade. :)

Gotcha. Thanks

And thanks.
Last October I called DirecTV to see what kind of deal I could get on a HR2x for the new bedroom HDTV I got. At that time I had a HR20-700 that was about a year old and a HR10-250 which was at least two years old.
I was offered a HR2x for "absolutely free". No mention was made of my HR10-250. I accepted the offer, got a HR20-100, it was installed, and it showed up on my bill as a $0.00 charge.
Last week I called and told them I'd like to get my HR10-250 replaced because it couldn't get all the new HD channels. I was told that the DVR I was given for free last October was the replacement for the HR10 and that another one would be $199.99. So I'm guessing that the offer of the free DVR was to "replace" your HR10-250. There have varying reports lately as to whether you actually get to keep your HR10, depending on whether you own it or it's leased.

In many cases, even if it's leased, they don't want it back. If your HR10 is broken, and you have the protection plan, then you would get an HR20/21 in it's place.....

DirtecTV called ME with this offer. I had a R15 and HR10 (both leased), I asked if they could swap the R15 and let me keep the HR10 for OTA HD..nope. I said I'd have to think about it, I watch a lot of local HD. I figured it very likely I would get a HR21 and not a HR20.
Wife calls a few days later..."of course we can swap out the R15 instead"
Cool, I get to keep my OTA HD, got a NEW HR21:)
I know D* has a lot going on but the right hand should know what the left is doing. CSR roulette can't be good for business.

From what I have read here, a lot of people are saying - I ordered a new DVR from DIRECTV and I got a refurb !

Makes sense when they are all lease now. It will happen more and more just like it has been happening with cable companies going back many many years.
Unless we are talking true refurbs and not just recycled boxes.

In my opinion, D* should give new receivers to new customers, and refurbished receivers to people already with the service looking to replace or add new ones without going to Best Buy, Costco, etc.
It is not true that major cable companies give customers used boxes; we've gone through 4 boxes with TWC, and only one of them (a standard, non HD, non DVR) box has been previously used. Now we are on our third Scientific Atlanta HD-DVR box in two years; so I don't think it is a matter of getting rid of old boxes, it is the lack of quality in Scientific Atlanta products. Actually, the only box we never had problems with was the first standard used box...
