When this was first mentioned, I was really surprised TC Plus w/locals was not going up. Now for just $1 more (as opposed to $2) you get an additional 17 channels. Are the increases still set for March 18?

Curtis0620
02-18-03, 01:51 PM
Premiums should be:

1st $12 $12
2nd $10 $11
3rd $9 $10
4th $8 $8
5th $7 $7

effective March 18th

Well then Dish is dead. TC+w/locals is the same price as AT100 w/locals.

Steve according to a Directv CSR who roams the board over at DBS Forums.....Yes the increases are effective March 18....Ive got TC+ w/locals so needless to say Im thrilled...(Only exception is if you have a year commitment agreement....then the increases take effect after the expiration of such commitment).:hi:

Even worse with Dish is that for $1 LESS you get more channels with TC w/locals than you do with AT100 w/locals as TC has more channels than AT100.

I really don't know how DiSH is going to compete. Charlie's playing hardball with YES, Trio, and numerous other channels. You can purchase a two-room system with a dual tuner DirecTivo for under 300 bucks, the same system from Dish would cost upwards of $500. Now Dish has raised their base packages by two bucks, while Directv doesn't raise the price of their most popular package at all. Directv may be losing money, but Dish will be in the same boat soon if they can't appeal to new subs. Their current subs will jump ship if they continue to put their hand in the alligator's mouth with respect to contracts with networks. Maybe Charlie is a lot smarter than me, but I just don't get it.

bills976: neither do I unless those DBSForums predictions aren't accurate and they really do raiset the rates of TC+w/locals

BTW Bills976: if I posted your post in the Dish forum, people would call me a whiner.

Unless you are getting a substantial upfron bonus(over $70 cash + a 2 receiver system installed free) why would you subscribe to Dish unless you wanted either just AT50 or international channels. Anybody getting AT100 or A150 with locals would be stupid to keep Dish over 1 year, unless you can get ClubDish credits to make up the difference. Does DirecTv have an equivalent?

I called DirecTV today, the Total Choice Plus with locals will remain unchanged at $39.95. However I dropped the west coast networks (used them for time shifting only, got a DVR now, and their going up .42 cents per channel), as for the "movie channels" their going up as earlier posted, NO NEW FEEDS, too many repeats, so I dropped them too! Now we can attend a movie at the theater, before 6 p.m. for only $5.00, go to dinner and maybe even shopping. There's more to life than just TV. The movie channels are no longer worth it, just my .02 cents.

I tend to agree with you Wayne......the only reason I keep HBO and Showtime is because of the boxing.....other than that I really dont watch them that often....Im always watching something in the sports pak or the sports sub packs Ive got...

Well not necessarily "crap", but Direct is the worst television provider I have ever had in my house. I have had digital cable, Dish(which I have now), and Directv. Digital cable and Dish are tied for being the best, with Direct a distant second. There is a reason Dish continues to sell better and consistently gets better performance evaluations from home theater magazines, it's a better service plain and simple.

 Thats even a more hillarious statement than what you posted a few days ago.....you Dish subs crack me up with your hillarious praise of Cheapo Charlie.....:rolling:  DISH is THE Crap service IMHO..

I don't think either "service" is crap. I just think that for an existing customer DirecTV is a way better deal right now. Of course, unless you have ClubDish credits. Even 1 $5 credit a month makes a huge difference and swings the deal in favor of Dish. Tack on 1 or 2 more and it's no contest. Personally, I'm a retailer with no storefront account. The only reason I have free programming is from ClubDish credits. ClubDish can really turn into a pyramid scheme. ClubDish is Dish's version of hacking the cards.

Nothing hilarious about it my friend, I have had both services so I have been able to compare. Judging from your signature, Direct is the only service you have used since you have had them since 1995 so you really don't have anyway to compare. I had Direct for 2 years, and am now with Dish. Direct's channel lineup, picture quality, and overall service are all inferior to Dish's. That is a FACT. Whether you want to accept that reality or not, that's up to you but I am telling you there is a difference between the two services. Like I said, check out Consumer Reports or any home theater magazine next time they do a feature on DBS, Dish is usually always the recommended service. Jeffwtux did make a point that Direct is a less expensive service, and while that's true, the old saying of "you get what you pay for" applies here as well. Those that want a better channel lineup, more HDTV, and more premiums and are willing to pay a little more, these are the people that go with Dish. If you are satisfied with a lesser service in Direct, then good for you.

Comparisons of Picture quality between E* and D* could go on forever. They take different approaches to compression and some people prefer one way over the other. D* tends to use a higher resolution so they tend to get a sharper picture with more compression artifacts. E* tends to do more preprocessing which gives a bit less effective resolution but reduces compression artifacts.

Channels also tend to move around and compression changes. E* really improved a lot of stations when they put up E8 and rearranged channels.

To definitively say one service always delivers a better picture than the other is going to be based more on the viewer preference for the compression approach the DBS provider selected than a measured system.

Definately WRONG on this count! - I have the current issue (March 2003) of Consumer Reports & in the 3 page article they wrote regarding differences/advantages/disadvantages between off-air/cable/DBS, they did NOT write one SINGLE, SOLITARY word in this article that said EITHER DBS service was better than the other, in ANY regard whatsoever! (The ONLY difference they DID mention was that to get HD prog on D*, you needed an oval dish while you needed two w/E*)

Try again, as you troll out of here... !rolling :bang  :rolling:
