I currently have comcast and want to switch to directv. I live in Houston so programming is way better with dtv but am worried about dsl being way slower than cable modem. When i go to speedtest.net and run speedtest i am 17-20mbs down and about 2 up. What speed are people getting running dsl? Anyone who switched recently noticed a big difference?

Every market... and even on different blocks... results can be different.

For DSL concerns... check... www.broadbandreports.com

you may want to consider uverse from at&t for your internet... probably a little faster than dsl... and it's available in houston... https://uverse1.att.com/un/launchAMSS.do

it's probably not as fast as your cable internet though.. 17-20 mbps is pretty darn quick... if speed is that important to you, you could always keep comcast for internet... but you'll pay a little more for it...

I was reading the Hughsnet and Wildblue websites and their "Fair Access Policy" I saw on their highest $ package, you are limited to around 7 gigs a month. I sometimes go through that in a day!

sat internet should be a last resort... when no other options are available...

Uverse just came to my neighborhood in Houston, but they wouldn’t let me sign up for just internet.

It was only available as part of a bundle package with the TV service.

I use to have DSL with Earthlink. Then I changed to Earthlink with cable modem. Night and day, cable modem is the way to go. Earthlink uses the local cable company (Time Warner here) to provide the cable modem access. My bill actually comes from TW. I pay less going through Earthlink than I would if I just got TWs access (Road Runner).

I have Embarq (Sprint) DSL and I'm not concerned with speed, so when they call me and ask if I want to upgrade I always say no. In other words, I have the standard DSL offering but could improve its speed if I wanted to. I forget the exact result of my last speed test, but it was 1.5 Mbps or so. No way will you get the kind of speed your measuring.

looks like a couple people in this thread were able to do it... http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=117917

or.. sign up for both... then just cancel the tv after the 30 day trial...

I live in Houston and I currently just have the internet service of U-Verse. I've had DTV since 2003 and comcast for internet even longer and when U-Verse came to our neighborhood, they gave us to top TV package and internet free for 3 months. After the 3 months, I called and told them I wanted to keep the internet and not the TV (NFL Sunday Ticket is a must have for me). In my opinion, U-verse internet service is much more reliable and cheaper ($40 a month straight up for standalone internet service) than comcast which is why I switched.

I don't know why they said you couldn't get standalone internet micky76ag, but it is possible. I would call back and talk to someone else, if you really want it.

i don't think this is available in HOUSTON but some other users might be able to order FiOS broadband. they currently offers some crazy UPLOAD AND DOWNLOAD speeds like

50 down/20 up or 30down /15up (http://www22.verizon.com/content/consumerfios/packages+and+prices/packages+and+prices.htm) etc....

if your looking for speed thats the best way to go (in the select markets that its available)

but honestly if you getting those speeds from your cable co, i would stay.. what did you say 17/2 thats quick, in my opinion, for cable.

you could always phone and internet with one provided than get D* as your TV provider.

since At&T does not like D* i don't believe you would be able to bundle with them.

Thanks AirRocker and mforward!

I'm on Comcast cable modem at $60.00 / month (price went up after Comcast bought out TW).

I'm very interested in uverse internet -- in theory it should be faster and it is cheaper.

I only talked to the sales team that was walking around the neighborhood the week they added us to their net.

I'll research it some more and hopefully sign up.
