View Full Version : Question on additional receiver
Greetings,
I currently have 2 receivers (nonDVR) and want to add one. Its a 5lnb dish. The installer says that they have to run another line from the satellite to add a reveiver. Is there any way around this? I have the 2 lines coming from the receiver to my house pretty well hidden right now and just looking for an alternative. Do they make any types of splitters for satellite? THX

The line run is the best way to go right now. They sell something called a SWM Single Wire Multiswitch, but its hard to get and really expensive about $400. Search around the forum and you'll find a lot of information on it. For one more box it's not really worth it. Just have the other lines run. Also a DVR usually requires 2 lines.
And welcome to DBStalk dude.
As noted by GlennJ84, you're looking at either running another line (best approach given the facts you set out) or using a SWM8 (actually about $280 right now from forum member Dave29). If you use the SWM8, you'll have to still run the extra lines from the dish inside the home (need 4 going to SWM module), or you'll have put the SWM8 module outside by the dish...but you'll still need 4 lines coming out of the dish into the SWM. In the future, DirectTV has said they will have a SWM LNB that will only require one line from the dish lnb into the house and then can use properly rated splitters from there...unknown when this will be available.
Greetings,
The installer says that they have to run another line from the satellite to add a reveiver.
The installer was wrong about this. You need to run another line from the satellite dish to add another receiver not from the actual satellite.

that would be 1 long cable run:D 22,000 miles
How many amps will it need?:D
If you decide to install the other line, go ahead and have them run the fourth line as it will be required if you decide to add any more receivers.

Just to add. You may have to pay the installer for running the extra line that isn't needed. He may do it for free but don't expect it.
