I find this completely unacceptable. My HR21 was set to record tonights Battlestar Galactica episode. I was watching something else while it was supposed to be recording it (my wife doesnt care for it). Later tonight I wanted to watch it after it was recorded and you know what I got?

One hour of nothing. I got a recording of a black screen with no audio for an hour. The recording history didn't show any errors.

This is utterly ridiculous. I may be able to look over some small issues, but not recording what I ask it to is not acceptable.

Yeah Im recording the 12:30 showing. But does that make it OK? I called D* about the issue tonight. I was basically told to call again if it happened and they would swap out the HR21 unit. I never had these issues with the Tivo D* receiver. IMHO, the biggest requirement of a DVR is to record what I tell it to. If Im an idiot and there's a conflict I understand, but in this case there wasnt.

but as with all things electronic - things happen. When you come across an electronic device that NEVER has a fault of ANY kind let me know. DTivo was/is never perfect either, instead of an hour long blank recording it would just not record.

My 622 did the same thing. I set my timer to look for the uplinked scifihd but all I got was a black screen.....

There would be no point in swapping the receiver - it's a software issue. There's a thread in the CE forum to collect data on it if you want to help resolve the problem.

Yeah I don't see how replacing the DVR will fix the problem. I seriously doubt this is an issue with my specific receiver. I may have to learn more about the CE program.

I'm not sure which is worse... a blank screen for the entire recording... or getting into it and having the signal scramble all to hell. I've not had a whole lot of luck successfully recording the new HD channels... it's a crapshoot.

It finally happened last night while watching live TV. All my signal strengths were in the 80s and 90s... but I suppose all it takes is a wisp of a cloud overhead and the signal strength drops significantly. I'm getting increasingly frustrated w/ D* and their picture quality... or lack thereof.

It recorded fine on both my HR10 and HR20-700. I have had similar problems which is why I record on both DVRs. BSG is really awesome in HD so I am always happy when the HR20 comes through.

I just had this happen with the new episode of The Office thursday! Anyone know what causes this? It boggles the mind...

It recorded fine on my HR20 too. But the problem with the unwatchable bug is real and has been here since this box was release almost 2 years ago. It is not dead it is just not as common. It is unacceptable for a bug like this to live for this long.

If you want some history on it here you go:

When the the bug is two years old, what do you get it for its birthday?
