I figured I would give DirecTV props, since there is a lot of complaints on here.
I recently had a tech come out and replace my old sidecar dish with a slimline. Granted, at the time I was irked at DirecTV for suckering me into the "protection plan", but my signals went from low 80's to upper 90's.
Up here in Duluth, Minnesota the past 2 days we had a Blizzard with up to 60 mph winds and blowing snow. It knocked out power and took off 2 local TV stations. That being said, I had absolutely no issues with my DirectTV service. Portions of my house siding flew off, but my DirecTV service went uninterrupted.
So, I would like to say Thank you to DirecTV.

Thank you for the great testimony and information.
While I share your strong success rate of solid signals with adverse weather, you are correct in pointing out others on occasion have less of a good experience.
There have been alot of posts in various threads about weather-related good and bad results, so its nice to hear that you did not have a "snow-out".
Also, hopefully, you don't get much more snow this year!
Enjoy your DirecTV!
Thanks for taking the time out to pass on the compliment. If you haven't yet, I would suggest you also pass this on to the installation company. It may or may not filter down to the installer, but if it does, let me assure you that while it may not be monetarily rewarding it will most definitely be personally rewarding to him/her.
It's all about the care taken in installing and aligning the dish. I'm glad to hear you not only got an installer that knew his trade, but was willing to take the extra ten minutes to apply that knowledge.
Reports like this are great to hear and should be the norm not the exception with company/contract installers.
My "old sidecar dish" has worked great thru my last 2 Minnesota winters.
What was wrong with your "old sidecar dish" ? If nothing was wrong with it I'm kinda surprised DIRECTV didn't charge you $100-$200 just to come out and replace it just because you decided you wanted a slimline.

I switched to Directv from Charter cable in October, and my biggest fear was weather related outages.
Now that the "worst winter in Madison history" has passed and the 9 feet of snow that came with it,
there was not one outage I know of the whole time.
Truly awesome.

Initially it was installed without a support bracket. Low and behold, first windy day and it was out of alignment. I thought I could climb up there and adjust it. I was wrong, so D* sent someone out to install the support bracket. After the new HD channels rolled out, I was losing signal constantly. I would get a dusting of snow and the signal was gone. So I guess I was thinking the slimline for less surface area.

FYI - Snow Fade is dependant on the water content of the snow.
Heavy wet snow is what causes signal problems.
Light dry snow rarely causes signal problems.

Hmmmm....
I installed my own 5 LNB dish a year and a half ago without a support bracket and I've never had any problems.

Despite your good TV signal, I think you ought to move. A blizzard at the end of April????
