Sorry if this has been posted already. I have been doing searches and seen discussions on it in many posts but nothing about a time line.

I would like to network my HR21's and beable to play any recordings from any of them.

When will this feature be implemented?

There is no date or timeline on when it will be implemented.

Are they even working on it? Or is this just a pipedream?

I'm a network engineer and can't wait for the day this happens! Neighbors think I’m crazy we bought this house and I wired it, 12,000 feet of CAT5 and still counting! Would love to see those Ethernet ports on the back of DirecTV boxes be used to their full potential!

Yes they are...

They have made several references to it in their presentations to investors.

Why is it taking so long?

1) Is the their software dept overworked?
2) Is it more difficult to implement then we think?
3) Are they trying to make HR21 do something (MRV) that it wasn't originally designed to do?
4) Politically reasons?
5) Something else?

It seems straight forward to me so there must be some reason.

I don't think anyone here really knows the reasons.

Exactly right, litzdog, and all we can do is speculate.

Some of the speculation was that part of the delay for MRV had to do with ensuring the security controls are sufficient to keep content "in-system", that it is only distributed to authorized receivers on the home network under the same account and that it can't be captured in digital format to "outside" devices.

Who knows ... maybe it's about the security, and maybe MRV is done and it's being held up by the Marketing Department, trying to come up with a new snazzy jazzy self-descriptive totally cool alternative name for MRV for use in the menu system and marketing literature ...

This ought to be really simple. I already have two Media Center PC's that can stream recorded programming through my XBOX 360 to my living room...the technology isn't something that new.

It's pretty easy to say something ought to be really simple just because another product can do it.

Why can't the cable company DVRs do MRV ? It ought to be really simple cause the non-HD TiVos can do it.

MRV will most likley be made availble with the next model of dvr that we need to upgrade to when they convert to MPG6 encoding

Get yerself a spare SD tivo and you can MRV those shows wherever you want, even play 'em on the HR2x. All those ports on the back of the HR2x are active too, so I suppose you could capture on a pc with a tuner card.

Ok - I'll bite - while I am quite sure there is no such thing and in the face of there being no complete MPEG4 implementation - what is MPEG6 ?

My speculation is that MRV and Media Share will use much of the same technology. Media Share still has a long way to go (additional codecs and stability) and until it is working much more smoothly (it has actually gone backwards a few times), I don't see MRV happening.

My speculation is that MRV and DOD will use much of the same technology (code base). If I'm right, MVR should not be that far away.

I see Media Share as being a tough nut to crack for Directv - there are so many variables... different OS's, different Media Servers, different media file formats, different copy protection schemes, different networking setups....

It is not far from being here. We are already seeing hints of MRV today in the media player/server architecture for the HR2x equipment.

Directv is a member of the DLNA organization and has implemented it into the HR2x series. As long as media players/servers are compliant with DLNA, then it will work with the HR2x series of network in the home.
