Hei, I'd like to use the OTA decoder in the DP301 without activating service or connecting to a dish. I hope to just attach a 4228 to the Antenna In on the DP301. Is this possible?

If not, could I do this with a cheep DirecTV receiver? Goal is to get OTA as cheeply as possible.

Also, I have a new silver remote (137174 Pro 6.2), but it doesn't control the DP301. I've tried the 1 & 2 keys, A & B, etc, but it will not power down the receiver. The instrictions say use the Sys Info button to program the remote, but there is none on the DP301.

Any advice?

The 301 does not have an OTA decorder. Walmart has a ota box for about $45. No additional charges would be incurred. You could also go online to dtv2009.gov and get a coupon for $40 off the price. I think you can print the coupon out on your printer and but the unit today.

You would need a HDTV receiver from either DISH or Directv to get the needed ATSC tuner for OTA DIGITAL signals. That eliminates the low cost receivers and most require a subscription to work.

On the 301 pull the smart card and wait about 30 sec. the system info screen will come up.

800-333-3474 and tech support option may get you answers to questions about operation of DISH equipment.

Only the ViP series of receivers actually have an OTA decoder. The rest of Dish Network's equipment just pass through whatever signal they're given. Therefore, you need either a 211, 222, 612, 622, or 722 to use them as a DTV box.

The 6.2 remote will not control the 301 unless you have the green #1 tab (WITHOUT the UHF Pro logo!) inserted. That will place the remote in IR mode for proper operation with an IR-only receiver.

Non-ViP DISH receivers with OTA ATSC decoders would include my 942 (NTSC and ATSC), but 811 and 921 come to mind as well. With the 6000, you needed to get the optional 8VSB module to get an ATSC tuner.

My 942 came with a 6.2 that sends IR just fine if I turn the blue UHF Pro with a black 2 over to display the black UHF side. With that inserted, it generates "old" UHF" and IR. Two of the 4 switch positions on a 6.2 remote will send IR in Sat mode, and you can program Aux for a dish receiver and send IR to control a 301.

Instead of trying to get the DP301 to work, you could wait until the E* TR-40 converter box comes out. From what I can tell online (there is little detailed information right now), the remote and interface looks similar to the 522/622 receivers (it is unknown if your existing E* remotes can be programmed to work with the TR-40). It will be sold for $40, so you can get two of them for free with the two $40 coupons you can get from www.DTV2009.gov. The catch is that is isn't gong to be available until June and the coupons expire 90 days from when they are mailed (you can't print them out as noted above) so you might want to wait to apply in case E* delays the launch of the TR-40. I jumped the gun and signed up for the coupons in January, and they expire on 6/4 so I may not be able to get the TR-40 with the coupons. I even called E* and they couldn't do a pre-order and advised me to wait until just before the coupon expires and check back with them. I don't know if you will start seeing them in stores or if they only will be available through E* and its retailers.

As a side note, they are also offering the TR-50 which contains a DVR for OTA recording, but you won't be able to use the coupon for that box and I don't know when that will be released.

Thanks for all the helpful info ppls.

OK so the DP301 is out. I guess also the DirecTV D11's have only a diplexer and not a decoder as well.

I've applied for those darned coupons several times over the past year or so, and never received a single one. I think it's a sham.

You can only get 2 coupons so multiple applications only floods the system. But they are real and people are getting them and they are valid.

www.dtv2009.gov I believe is the correct website for applying and most major retaillers have an approved box available starting at the $50 level.:) :) :)

So is the addressing for IR or UHF? I thought it was UHF only? How would I set the IR address? I guess the goal is to find out what the receiver is set to in SysInfo, and then set the remote to match? The addressing will affect both, but the 301 only sees IR. Once you get to the Sys Info screen, you can set the remote to match the receiver, press Record to set the receiver to match the remote, or choose a new address.
