I know there have been numerous threads and countless posts over the whole $5.99 vs. $7.99 Protection Plan, and I had to call and switch to get it reduced from $7.99 to $5.99.

I just wanted to say that when I went to the DirecTV website to look at "my programming," the Protection Plan showed up as $5.99 (and that's what I was charged on the bill that came in last week); however, in tiny print below that, it said "Advanced Plan, $7.99." I don't know if that's a relic from the old days or if there really still is a $7.99 plan. I just thought I'd pass it on.

Thanks for the info. :)
We have had the Protection Plan in place from day 1 with DirecTV.I will take a look at our billing later and see what they are currently charging us.

I see no 'tiny print' with any reference to an 'advanced $7.99' plan whatsoever. I have the Service Coverage printed out right in front of me. So, I don't know what the heck you're talking about.

Product 'extended warrenties' are usually a bad deal, but it all depends on the amount (total cost) of the item(s) and of course, the 'fee'. I've done all my own wiring (all highest grade RG6), although DirecTV mounted my AT9 dish (and came back for free a couple months later to install the monopoles they didn't the first time around), and re-aimed it at that time. That was just shy of two years ago, and although I'm in a very high 'wind' area, and check (and record) the signal strengths at least once a week, no dropoffs at all. And, my HD locals are on Spaceway2/99deg (100's) so I know it's 'peachy' for D11.

But I've just gotten the last 'new' DVR to replace the final SD receiver, and so now have close to $1K with all the boxes plus multiswitch/SWM. So, the cost/benefit ratio is starting to look pretty good, as the 'crossover' point of plan costs vr. equipment replacement is well over 10 years.

This is what he is talking about.

I think that it is a holdover from the old days when you were charged $7.99 for the Protection Plan if you had "advanced" equipment on the account.

I am getting charged $5.99 for mine, but the small print on the DirecTV website says that I am paying $7.99.

I don't see that on mine...

Ok, under "current setup", I do see that, but nothing on my bill. Anyone notice that under receivers if you have an HR21 it is still a pic of a silver HR20, and not the black HR21?

Once again, 'left hand doesn't know what right hand is doing'. The people doing the 'programming' on their web site are about as behind the curve as the rest of their programming 'efforts', it appears. Go to the actual part that I referenced in my post above, and there appears to be a lack of coordination. Such a lack is what gets state AG's up in a lather when it comes to such 'insurance' policies (some states may not even acknowledge that is is such, read the legalese in the contract).

They need to correct their 'language', lest they get 'wacked' by some young eager-beaver in one of those state AG offices.

I see that on mine, but that's the only place you'll see it. I pay $5.99 and have 7 DVRs on my account - 6 of them HD.

The other places on their web site where it mentions the cost of the plan state only the $5.99 price. Their information channel (ch 201) states also $5.99 no matter what equipment you have on your account.

I'm guessing that's just a hold over (though I'm not sure why after the recent extensive upgrade of their web site - why would that still be there???). Although if it reads that way on that page and someone still IS paying $7.99 a month, it may keep them from questioning it.

Yeah, I don't care what the web site says, I care what they bill me for and collect. They're taking $5.99 from me and that's what's on the bill. Good enough.

I've got one better than that!

If I had only known, I'd never have gotten the HR10, much less an HR20!

I've never opted to have the protection plan. I can see why some folks do carry it nowadays. I've been lucky I guess as DirecTV has always taken care of issues on their dime or I've fixed it myself. So far, I'm ahead by about $800 over the last 11 years of service.
