View Full Version : NHL - CBC - HD
Would someone explain to me why D* and / or NHL CI can't receive an HD signal from CBC every Saturday, yet Versus can whenever they want during the playoffs??

Although Versus picked up CBC's feed earlier tonight it wasn't HD.

Wow, if that was HD then it was the worst HD picture Ive seen. Usually, you can tell the difference right away, not so watching that game

It looked like HD to me. Can you provide support to your claim?

Could be contractual and/or infrastructure issues. Note that Dish does not directly carry CBC games in HD either.

The Sharks at Flames game on Sunday night was 16x9 but it looked very washed out. I'd be reluctant to call it HD.

Didn't watch that game, but watched the earlier Bruins game on CBC-HD (via Star Choice), and it was widescreen SD.

The hockey looked like Widescreen SD, but the graphics looked like HD...

Not really. Like others said it was Widescreen SD. I watched ESPN News earlier this morning and they had the same bad looking SD feed Versus had.
I still have the game on my DVR if you want me to take a picture and upload it.

Here in San Jose, we got the first 5 minutes of HD feed on VS, then the screen went blank and said the game was blacked out and we had no other choice but to watch it in SD on what-used-to-be-FOX-Bay Area. Somehow I missed that it's now Comcast instead of FOX -- can I assume local COmcast subscribers got the HD game, while us DTV folks go the SD game?
That was incredibly LAME.

Negative, Comcast has had majority ownership and operated the sports network for a few years now. They just rebranded it to a CSN to coincidence with the MLB season opening.
Anybody in your area would be blacked out from the VS/VS HD feed because CSN has the local rights to that game. If you note the Schedule at the CSN Bay Area website (http://bayarea.comcastsportsnet.com/Sharks.jsp), the away games are in SD, home games in HD for this series.

I would like to see the pic you have, because on DISH channel 9468(VS/GOLF HD), the game was definitely in HD. i noticed absolutely no picture difference when they switched over from the NJD/NYR (a game which VS produced themselves in HD) to the CBC feed. it was crystal clear. In fact I emailed VS earlier today and rec'd a response that the game was picked up from the CBC HD feed. Just like every other game they have picked up from CBC during the playoffs. In fact the picture looked better than my local RSN when they broadcast BlueJackets/Cavs games in HD.

There was no HD production from CSN BA, they only did an SD production. Each broadcaster has its own production and feed for a game.
Last night, CSN BA had an SD production and CBC did an HD production (looked like Widescreen SD to me) production and Versus simulcast that on their HD channel.
CSN BA couldn't just "pick up" the CBC HD feed because they wouldn't have any control over camera angles, shot selection. Plus they would need to have the rights to show the CBC broadcast.
Tonight's Detroit v. Nashville game will have 3 separate productions
Versus - HD and SD
FSN Detroit - HD and SD
FSN South - SD
I saw the game just so I could say I've seen CBC HD, and thought it wasn't as crisp as HD normally is. I figured maybe it was upscaled SD, but I don't know exactly what that looks like, unless it was what I saw with this game last night on Vs.

CBC-HD productions are generally not the best PQ-wise, but the difference between their HD and widescreen SD is noticable (as it should be!). I know the Boston game wasn't HD, but assumed the Calgary game would have been (I didn't watch, so can't say) -- it was flagged as HD in my Star Choice receiver guide.

There is no way that Sharks game was in HD. Not even close.

If it was in HD, their score/time graphic would be in the center of the screen, not out to the left edge - which it was. It was a pretty good SD picture, but not HD.

well, i watch a ton of sports in SD and also in HD and i know the difference(not saying that you dont) IF, it wasnt in HD, then VS did a fine job of covering it up. i watched the OT of the first game and that went straight into the second game and there was no difference, and the score/time was centered on my screen just like all HD sportscasts on FSN, networks, ESPN, etc is....so i guess we will have to agree to disagree...im from buffalo, so right now i dont even know what im doing watching playoff hockey, since i got jack to root for

I've got to agree. The CBC to VS broadcast was no where near their usual quality or that of NESN, MSG or CSN HD broadcasts. Looked "fuzzy".

Well if in fact it wasn't HD, it was the best SD feed i've seen in awhile. The Flames' jersies were jumpin off the screen and the sea of red in the crowd had plenty of saturation. No fuzziness here.

They have. I don't think D* has the proper equipment right now to pick up the CBC HD feed. But I've always thought why couldn't they just pick it up OTA from Buffalo, Detroit, or even Seattle and pipe it up to the satellite along with those cities local channels?

contracts.
I think the confusion people are seeing is that on a smaller set the nice looking SD widescreen looked like HD, but on larger sets like my 61" It was obvious that it wasn't HD.

Well, whether it was washed out or widescreen SD, its all better than crappy SD feed us Buffalo Fans were forced to watch the sabres on Dish this year.
We have been told we will get our locals next month in hd. I emailed dish and told them I have no plans to watch Buffalo in MSG-SD next season, and will be a sub of Directv or a triple player at twc (yuk I hope not). Our best feeds of the year came from VS or on the NHL on the fly.

While most of this thread is made up of arguing over whether this or that feed is actually HD, the fact is that NHL Center Ice does not carry the CBC games in HD and no one has ever supplied a decent reason. I would think the NHL would be very interested in this but they don't seem to care. :( :(
And...by the way...on my Sony Bravia tiny (32 inch) tv most of those versus games argued about above were definitely in HD.

Sounds like that is good call in question or email question for Commissioner's Radio show on Thursdays at 4pm on XM radio and nhl. com

Sounds like that is good call in question or email question for Commissioner's Radio show on Thursdays at 4pm on XM radio and nhl. comIt has been asked before and the standard response to any HD question is that it most likely a bandwith issue.
I called and emailed DTV (which was useless) to get CBC. Many cable companies in northern states get CBC. Their hockey coverage is supurb. Watching versus is like watching paint dry. ESPN did a far better job covering multiple games simultaneously. Too bad they dropped the NHL. No wonder hockey ratings in this country are poor.
I'm all for getting CBC even if it's blacked out every now and then. Don Cherry is funny as hell.
thats why i have been playing with ota antenna for a year to get cbc HD. I am in the suburbs of buffalo and many people have it and love it. I am just in a dead spot and have unable to get the signal (yet!!)
