Is there any way you can program a macro, or trick the standard remote (RC64R) into powering on and off three pieces of equipment instead of just the receiver and the TV with the On/Off buttons on the right? I know about using slide switch for AV1 and AV2 and the PWR button, but that seems too difficult for the wife!

The DIRECTV remote can program 2 other devices other than the TV and the receiver. You might have to look to make sure they have the code.

That would be a "no". In order to turn on/off a 3rd piece of equipment, you would need to program the equipment into the AV1 or AV2 spot.

I second that "no".

I wish it were possible, but it isn't. There are a couple of solutions I have tried. The one my wife likes is the Logitech Harmony (Minimum $80 at Sam"s to over $400, they all work). The other is the Universal Remote Control URC-R6 ($20 at Walmart under the name AVEX). The Harmony is easiest to program, using their website and the URC-R6 is a little more difficult using thousands of possible codes and its learning capability. I use both but prefer the Harmony for ease of use, just press a button named "Watch TV". I know there are others that work well but the ones I have tried all had some little characteristic I didn't like.

So a follow up question....

I prefer to use my AVR for all my TV watching. With my old TiVo that turned on both the TV and AVR at the same time, I just hit one button to turn everything on (of course, there was never really a "power off" for TiVo).

Are you guys telling me that to keep the same setup, I have to slide the switch between DIRECTV and AV1 every time (once to power up the AVR, then another time to regain DVR control)? And the only way to avoid that is to buy a Logitech Harmony? I do enjoy the RF capability of this remote, but having to slide the switch every time I turn something on/off is a downer.

I guess I figured out that I could leave the AVR on all the time and just never turn it off.

Yes, I am sorry to say that is the only way to do it. If it helps any I just recently bought a 880 harmony and they are awesome. Turns on everything, even turns the dvr to whatever channel you want when you turn it on very cool .:D

Harmony is great, but it's not the only way. Many cheap universals handle simple macros like this just fine. If you want to save some money, you can do the same thing with the Radio Shack 15-134 for $30. It's quite easy to program it to turn every thing on and do all the source switching with one button, and turn everything off with another. I use this remote with D*, so if you try it and need any help, post back. Check the links in my sig.

EDIT: Check out THIS (http://www.dbstalk.com/showpost.php?p=1480820&postcount=5) post for some advanced codes that may come in handy. And HERE (http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload.php?action=download&file_id=5425) is how to program it.

Related question...

Can the D* RF remote control a second H21 DVR (as AV1 or AV2) also with RF? Or do you have to revert back to IR to control 2 H21 boxes?

If the remote is in the RF mode, does it also emit IR at the same time?
Can other "RF remoteable" brands of equipment respond to the D* RF remote if they are not IR line-of-sight (probably wishful thinking)?

Thanks,
Howard

Yes, it can control a second RF receiver, just do the following:

1. av1 or av2
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 0 0 0 0 1

4. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
5. enter 9 6 1
6. press CH UP
7. enter the last 6 digits of the receiver ID #, found on a sticker in the access card compartment
8. press SELECT

If the remote is in the RF mode, does it also emit IR at the same time?

No, its one or the other.

No, the RF directv remotes only know one RF frequency, their own, which only control the following directv receivers: H10, H20, H21, HR20, HR21, R15, R16, and R22. They can't even control older RF directv receivers from such brands as RCA, Sony, and Hughes
